Candid Conversation: I am a 22 year old male who recently had sex for the first time with a girl I had only met that night. I fingered her vagina for quite some time before proceeding to put the condom on and begin intercourse. The thing is, my fingers were still wet as I was briefly handling my penis and the condom. I’m pretty sure I only really touched the base of my penis with those fingers, but I can’t really be sure. Should I be worried about any specific STIs that can be transmitted that way?

March 29th, 2011

There is always a small chance that STIs can be spread unintentionally between partners as you describe. Transmission of STIs can happen through contact with infected vaginal fluids, semen, rectal secretions, blood, and also through skin to skin contact. That being said, the likelihood for transmission as you describe it is pretty low, unless there was a cut [...]

Candid Conversations: I am a 21-year-old uncircumcised virgin male having difficulty maintaining a retracted foreskin while masturbating. Before reading Candid, I only retracted my foreskin to clean the glands; all masturbation since childhood kept the foreskin intact.

March 2nd, 2011

For men who are uncircumsized, free movement of the foreskin over the glans of the penis is the most pleasurable sensation- for both masturbation or for intercourse. The foreskin is there to protect the glans, and also provides some natural lubrication during self-stimulation or sex. Many uncircumsized men notice that their glans is very sensitive [...]

Candid Conversation: My boyfriend has phimosis, and can’t maintain an erection during sex. He’s gone to the doctor now, who thinks the two are related since penetration is so painful for him, but I don’t know how to help other than being there for him and helping him go through the doctor’s suggestions. I think he feels like he’s a failure since some men seem to relate their success to sexual performance, but I don’t know what to do or say to assure him otherwise. I don’t care if we have to wait awhile to go further – I’d rather that he enjoys it instead of being in pain.

Candid wants to commend you on being such a patient and compassionate partner! Phimosis can be a very painful condition, and for a lot of men, erection issues may occur. The real damage with erectile issues can often come from one’s own psychological and emotional reactions to the issue, but also from one’s partner’s reactions. [...]

Candid Conversation: I haven’t seen my period for about 3 months now and I’m worried because its getting to four months and I’m scared its because I have sex toys.

January 31st, 2011

Depending on a woman’s natural cycle, missing periods can be caused by a variety of reasons. Are you under a lot of stress lately? Have you lost a significant amount of weight lately? Are you on, or just started any form of birth control recently? Have you been ill recently? All of these could be [...]

Candid Conversation: I was recently on vacation and slept with someone. It was just a blowjob (unprotected) and then I came in her mouth. It was really quick and I talked to her for about 10 minutes before it happened. She didn’t have anything around her lips or mouth area and I did not touch any other part of her.

December 22nd, 2010

Unfortunately, there’s no definitive answer for this question. There are various sexually transmitted infections that can be passed from person to person through oral sex, particularly when no barrier protection is used. Some of these STIs are bacterial and can be ‘cured’ with antibiotics, some are viral and can be treated, but never cured. The [...]

Candid Conversation: I am nineteen years old almost turning 20, I don’t know why I am unable to insert my penis in my girlfriend’s vagina, she says her hole is tight but I believe my penis foreskin has not gone down completely as I don’t see my mushroom normally coming out as I saw on certain porn videos, help me, she feels I’m impotent. I am able to produce sperm and my penis becomes erect and tight when I feel something.

November 1st, 2010

Candid is wondering about a couple of issues here. Sometimes, when penetration isn’t happening, it can simply be from a lack of lubrication. Ensure that your girlfriend’s vagina is properly lubricated (either naturally, or use some water-based lubricant like KY-jelly if more is needed). If this doesn’t help, or if the ‘tightness’ is still occurring [...]

Candid Conversation: My girlfriend and I are always careful to use a condom for contraception. We like trying different positions, including having her on top during intercourse. She usually comes off and lies down beside me fairly soon after climaxing. Despite this, she has sometimes noticed that sperm has leaked out of the condom while she was still on top (with me lying on my back). We both enjoy this position but are worried that potential leakage could result in accidental pregnancy. Any suggestions?

November 1st, 2010

Regardless of position, condoms are a great way to protect against pregnancy and STI’s when used correctly. They need to be put on before your penis comes into contact with your partners body and/or bodily fluids, and they need to be removed before your penis becomes flaccid (or soft) in order for leakage not to [...]

Candid Conversations: Does the string from an IUD interfere with manual sex, eg. fingering? (I am wondering if the string gets in the way of manual sex)

May 27th, 2010

An IUD (or intrauterine device) is inserted directly into a woman’s uterus. Although the IUD itself is not felt once insertion takes place, a small amount of string will be visible inside of the vaginal canal. This string is attached to the IUD inside the uterus, and provides an opportunity for a woman and her [...]

Candid Conversation: I had unprotected sex 2 weeks ago. I used 3 latex condoms in earlier intercourse, but during the last one, I took off the condom and entered for about 15 seconds. I am allergic to latex, and 2 week later, the tip of my penis is very red. It is red, produce smegma, but has no discharge. The tip was really wrinkly the first initial days after intercourse, but now it seems to be less wrinkly but it is still very red. The tip was red or redish since Day+1 after the unprotected sex. So this is not sudden. It does not bother me at all. No discharge, and just visually unpleasant cause its red. There is no sores, bumps or anything at all. I do believe it is from the latex allergy, but it is still red after 2 weeks. Is this normal? Also the smegma that is being produced seems a bit excessive than normal and has the smegma odour. During urination there is no pain at all, and if I did not peel back the foreskin, it would not hurt at all. I guess you could say the foreskin is red and a tad swollen, but I don’t think its phimosis, though it is a bit enlarged. I noticed during the first initial days after intercourse, my penis was really dry (from the latex I am guessing), and I guess the smegma might have been produced due to the dry conditions. But now, it seems to be excessive.

A: As you know, Candid’s usual response would obviously be to go to a doctor to have this checked out. If you’re travelling abroad, did you purchase any travel insurance? Do you have access to any English-speaking physicians? Membership with International Association for Medical Assistance for Travellers (IAMAT) will provide you the names of physicans [...]
