Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

SFU Library is pleased to announce an expanded subscription for 2013 to lynda.com with an unlimited number of users. (Our past subscription was for 6 simultaneous users, which was frequently exceeded.)

If you are unfamiliar with lynda.com, here is a brief description:
Thousands of video tutorials from expert authors on software, design, and business skills. It covers hundreds of topics, including Photoshop, Microsoft Office, Flash, Final Cut Pro, presentation skills, print and web design, programming, design principles, digital photography and video, animation, and much more.”

You can access lynda.com here: http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/resource/10456

Note: New users will need to create a profile the first time they use lynda.com. After that, you will be able to create your own playlists and organize courses.

This is a one year pilot project as there is no ongoing funding to sustain this subscription after January 14, 2014. Over the course of this year, we will be gathering data and feedback on lynda.com to help determine whether this is a resource of use to departments and units across SFU.

If you have any feedback on lynda.com, please send it to lib-lynda@sfu.ca – thanks!

PsycTESTS database now available via SFU Library

Wednesday, December 12th, 2012

We are pleased to announce that access to the APA PsycTESTS database is now available via SFU Library: http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/resource/12168

PsycTESTS indexes more than 6,500 psychological tests, measures, scales, surveys, and other assessment tools including many relevant to educational psychology. Records provide descriptive information about test development and administration, and in most cases also provide the full-text test instrument. Records link to a variety of materials describing the test in peer-reviewed literature, technical reports, or dissertations.

Tests are compiled from a systematic review of peer-reviewed journals published by APA, Hogrefe Publishing Group, and other large publishers; technical reports from PsycEXTRA®; contributions from individual test authors; collections from the Archives of the History of American Psychology; and more. The database includes primarily unpublished tests, though commercially available tests indexed by APA are also included, with links to purchase instruments from the publisher.

Many thanks to all of you who submitted feedback on this resource.

Fast Search: Powerful New Library Search Tool Launches

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

SFU Library is excited to launch its new search tool called Fast Search. The Library’s new Fast Search instantly locates journals, articles, books, eBooks, electronic databases and other resources from our catalogue and beyond. Results are automatically ranked by relevance in a Google-like fashion. In addition, Fast Search supports *facets*, a powerful way to immediately refine search results by content type, subject terms, publication date, library location, and more. Abstracts pop up for quick review.

Fast Search is a subscription service called “Summon” provided by Serials Solutions in Seattle. Summon includes content from more than 6,800 publishers representing over 94,000 journal titles and 500 million items, including the existing library catalogue and other digitized local content. It will be a great starting point for students, but users with particular subject or disciplinary expertise will still want to access the Library catalogue and other online databases directly for more specific, and often richer, search capabilities.

University Librarian for Processing and Systems Brian Owen says, “The ‘one big search’ concept has been a longstanding wish-list item for libraries and Fast Search gets us one very big step closer to that goal.” Try it on the Library home page.

More information on Fast Search can be found here.
