Screencasting an iPhone
I am doing a short project on the use of mobile phones by “academic detailers” – a kind of “pharmacist advisor” who works for the government, not the drug companies.
One of the sidelines is to investigate what software would be appropriate on their devices, and I got looking at WebMD on the iPhone. In order to share this with my colleagues, I wanted to make a short video.
But how to make a video of an iPhone app? There is no video-out (unless you’re Steve Jobs, I guess) of normal applications (although you can show movies, using an adapter, on your TV).
Recently some folks have discovered a hack that lets “normal” (non video) applications to use that video out feature, but it requires a recompile of the application and the adapter cord.
A simpler solution, I decided, was to take a LOT of screen shots – a built in feature of the phone – and then assemble these on my laptop. While I flip through them, I record my voice and cursor, using ScreenFlow, a screencasting tool. It works pretty well, I think.
By the way, I don’t have bald spots or Alopecia… I was just clicking around. Honest.
