What does your online profile look like?
Friday, March 13th, 2009When I meet new people (online or face to face), I often do a quick google search to see what’s online. For uncommon names, I can just search the name, and for common names (the Smiths, the Singhs or the Chans), I’ll add the name of their university to the search to narrow down the field. Go on, Google yourself, and see what you find. I share my name with an MD and a basketball player, but you can find links to online iterations of myself in the first 12 links.
This blog posting address’ the necessity of understanding what your online profile says about you, and how that impacts job (and personal) prospects. Don’t count on your institution to do it for you: http://academhack.outsidethetext.com/home/2009/academic-branding-and-portfolio-control/
