Looking up a Reserves article for a course

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Q. Hi, I am taking Educ 427. There is an article on reserve in Burnaby. Can I get the title and author on line from the library website under the course? Thanks,

A. Yes you can by checking the library reserves module.

You can find the link to Reserves on the library home page – the third link down on the far right column. Once you click on this select thlink Reserves by course number on the page that displays.

Type in educ to bring up all the education courses

Unfortunately, when you do that you will see that there is nothing on reserve for education 427. Are you sure it was put on Reserve? Perhaps it is just a link to an online journal in the catalogue?

Missing book

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Q. Hello,
The book “Research Methods for Criminal Justice and Criminology” is on reserve at the Burnaby campus. There are supposed to be two copies of this book; however, one of the copies has not been returned since December. Is there anyway for the library to purchase another copy of the book? Thank you,

A. Hi, We will see if we can buy another copy.

Overdue reserve book

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Q. Hello! I have a course reserve book with me that was due yesterday at 10am. I had a small emergency which did not allow me to make it back to campus yesterday morning. I will be able to return the book this afternoon. Is there a maximum the fines go up to? Or does it just continue to increase until the book is returned?

A. Hi

There is a maximum but it is pretty high $50. It just keeps going up till it hits it.

If you cannot make it back in time you can renew a book online or by phone so long as no-one has a hold on the book and you have not already renewed the item 3 times. Of course if it is ovedue then you are stuck but it is often still worth a call as they may be able to renew it from then on so the fine would be less.

You can also appeal any fine if you think you have valid reasons why the fine should be waived.

Library Website Navigation

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Q. Please update the library website to be more user friendly to new students. I’m a mature student who isn’t famillar with the library system yet and found the process of navigating to instructions for assistance very difficult and there is an expected knowledge of things such as reserves vs. stacks and barcodes on books vs. barcode on student ID. This resulted in me being unable to renew online regardless of my attempts to seek help and I was still continuously billed for my reserves as I attempted to renew and awaited the whole weekend resulting in huge charges I was trying to avoid and can’t afford yet another fee that comes out of my family pocket. One hundred dollars over a weekend in book charges might not be much to the University but it is much needed for me and my three children.

A. Hello,

I work at the SFU library and oversee its web site. I believe my colleague, Scott Mackenzie, has written to you regarding fines on reserves items.

I couldn’t agree with you more re: a more user friendly library web site. Thanks for pointing out specific problems such as distinguishing between a barcode on a book as opposed to a barcode on a student ID card. We are continuously striving to make the library’s web site easier to use and I have noted your comments for further investigation.

If you have any other comments regarding the library’s site, please contact me directly.

Thank you,
Nina

Laptop Returns

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Q. I have been a SFU student for the last two years and have been using the Library services extensively. Last semester, I needed a missing page for the text and contacted a librarian at the check-out desk. She was so nice and helpful. I got the missing page almost immediately. MY experience at the Bennett library has been so good until today. Today, I was returning a laptop back to the library. The librarian asked for the plastic zip bag that goes with the cord, which I didnt have. I apologized and asked if I could pay for its cost. He was utterly rude and harsh about it, slamming on the laptop cord and refused to take back the cord. His behavior made me feel absolutely like I had just done something very bad and terrible. The issue here is the bag would probably cost 50 cents at max and I said that I was sorry and willing to pay for it back. Don’t get me wrong here, I am very appreciative of the Bennett library staff and how they have been treating me. But this one staff member should really re-valuate his actions since you are here to help us, the students, NOT to ’scare us away’ with your rudeness.

A. Hello,

We are very sorry to hear your most recent interaction with library staff was not as pleasant as previous occasions. I have spoken with the staff member and he does recall receiving a laptop and cord (sans plastic baggie) back from a patron. He also recalls asking the patron to remember in future to hang on to the bag so it can be returned with the cord (with the very high volume of transactions on laptops/cords, it could become quite expensive if we didn’t do this as a general rule) but it was never his intent, nor ours, to come across rude or harsh or to make you feel bad.

We appreciate that, heretofore, you have enjoyed good service and trust for the same in the future. We also appreciate that you have taken the time to express your concerns and remind us that sometimes our good intentions don’t always come across that way.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me direct if you have further concerns or questions

Reserve book

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Q: there are four books for the CFA Institute investment series one of them is in the Belzberg as a 4 hour reserve item since there are two copies of the same book can one of them becomes a 3week material so we can borrow it home?

A: Hi
I assume the book below is the one about which you are inquiring:
International financial statement analysis / Thomas R. Robinson … [et al.].

http://troy.lib.sfu.ca/record=b5394647~S1a

There are 2 copies of this book on 4 hour Reserve at Belzberg.

The decision as to how many copies should be placed on Reserve is not made by the library, but rather by the instructor in the course. Therefore any decision to remove one copy from Reserves would need to come from that same instructor.

Reserves and Ask Us Desk

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Q: Good morning:
I have two comments to make:
1. Reserve books constantly not in the right place. Its been more than four times when I go to get reserve books that they are not in the right order and sometimes even with the help of the library staff we were not able to find them, that brings me to the next point
2. the staff at the front counter and at the “Ask Us” counter located between the computer stations are extremely helpful and friendly, and I want to thank them all it makes my life as a student and everyday more enjoyable.
thanks

A: 1. Hi

Due to the heavy use of Reserves material, books are constantly being moved on and off the shelves. As this area is open to the public, often the books are removed by patrons to be photocopied or browsed and then returned to the shelf. Sometimes this results in misshelving.

In addition, there are times when the online catalogue gives a status of “In Library” but in fact the book is either being used by a student at one of the photocopy machines in the Reserves area or is on a truck waiting to be re-shelved. In those cases the book will be returned to the shelf in a relatively short time however I realize it can be frustrating to someone trying to find an item.

Staff do try and keep the shelves in order by doing periodic shelf reading when the desk is not busy however during busy periods the shelves can temporarily get a little messy. We have begun to assign a student shelver to the area at mid-day in order to get material back on the shelf quicker. Hopefully this will help.

take care
