Due date reminder email notices

Q. Hi there,

I am grateful that I get email notices reminding me that my books are almost due. I’m a busy student, with lots of things on my mind, and it’s very helpful. In turn, I expect them and almost start completely depending onthem.

My complaint is that the notices themselves are very difficult to read. And being a hurry, again as a student, I OFTEN miss an item listed in the email. Next thing you know I owe 7 dollars!

I am very aware that these email notifications are mostly a courtesy on the library’s part–but seeing as it is already in place and automated, wouldn’t it be great if it was easy to read? There must be a way.

I agree with you – these notices are hard to read if there is more than one item due to the way multiple items are formatted.

Unfortunately this is pre-formatted notification that comes from the vendor and I don’t think we can change it.

I will check however to see if it is possible to make some modifications.

Can I have a friend return my books and pay for my fines for me? Does it have to be me in person?

A: Hi,

Yes, a friend can return your books and pay the fines, however, we would ask that the charges be paid with cash (it is difficult to identify your account if they pay with their own credit/debit card and of course they may not pay with your debit/credit card)

Online renewals

Q: Hi,

1. when will the book renewal system be changed to online?
2. I have a few items that are over due. I did not receive any courtesy notice. why didn’t I receive one? I sometimes receive it and sometimes don’t. could you make it consistent that either I/we receive it all the time or don’t receive at all? because if you send me/us courtesy notices, then we tend to rely on them as opposed to keeping track of the due dates. Thanks.

A: Hi

You have the ability right now to renew books online. The number times an item can be renewed online has also recently been increased from 2 to 3 times. To renew your books online go the library home page and click on the link My library record / renew books and then on the next page click on the link at the top of the page View your lbrary record, renew books, etc. After logging into the system you can renew any or all books that are coming due. After 3 online renewals you will need to bring the books back to the library to have them renewed again.

Courtesy notices should be sent for any item that has a loan period of more than 7 days. Anything loaned for 7 days or less will not have a courtesy notice sent (this includes most Media and Reserve items – DVD, stc). If you do not receive a courtesy notice for a specific item with a loan period longer than 7 days please email me with the specifics and I will check into it.

Just a gentle reminder however that courtesy notices are just that – courtesy notices. It is always wise to keep track of due dates using the receipt given to you at the time the book is checked out or by checking your library record online.

Book overdue — but I have flu symptoms!

Q. I have been advised not to step foot into the harbour center because i have flu symptoms. i have a book overdue today, but I’m not sure what to do.on the one hand I have to return the book, on the other, im not permitted to come to school..what do you suggest?

A. I’m sorry to hear of your illness. Is it possible for a friend or colleague to drop off the book at any of our SFU Library locations (Burnaby, Vancouver or Surrey)? You may also mail the book back to the library at:

If you are unable to return the book by these means, I have put a note on your record regarding your illness and we will look at adjusting any fines when you are able to return the book.
