Problems with logging into Refworks

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

I am trying to login to Refworks and get a page that says it is now a service of the Ontario Scholars Portal. However, when I click on the provided link http://refworks.scholarsportal.info.proxy.lib.sfu.ca, nothing happens.

A. Thanks for reporting this problem. There seems to be an issue with the vendor’s side. We have contacted Scholars’ Portal to let them know and hopefully the issue will be resolved soon.

Sincerely,
Yolanda

Monday, June 20th, 2011

Q. Is the request books from other library site down?

http://www.lib.sfu.ca/find/document-delivery/request-form

A. The Request Items from Other Libraries site is available. On rare occasions, due to network issues, the interlibrary loans online forms do not work, but all is working fine right now. Please don’t hesitate to contact Don Taylor (dstaylor@sfu.ca) if you have any questions about interlibrary loans at the SFU Library.

iPhone App for the Library Catalogue

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Q. When is the library going to create an iphone app for the library catalogue? The library catalogue is great and useful, but a little more use of social media (i.e. facebook and twitter) would be better. Thanks.

A. Hi, Thank you for your suggestions, and we’re so glad you’re happy with the catalogue!

We should have a mobile site for Library services up in the next few weeks. It will be pretty basic to start but we’re working on adding features over time, and once it is up we will be looking for further feedback and suggestions on how to make it better. We’ll also investigate an iPhone app.

The Library does currently have a Twitter presence (www.twitter.com/sfu_library), and we welcome followers! Stay tuned for a Facebook page too — we’re just working on that.

Thank you again for writing.

Best regards,

Fast Search

I like the new Fast Search system – I’m finding all sorts of things that I wouldn’t have otherwise. It’s so much easier to find journal articles!

Broken Link – Psyccritiques

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Q. Your link to psyccritiques does not work. When I click on the link that is supposed to take me to journal site, I get a page that says: Please access electronic resources via the SFU library’s web site.

A. Hello,

Thank you for letting us know about this broken link. I have updated the information and the link should work correctly tomorrow after our system updates overnight.

In the meantime, you can use this direct link to access PsycCritiques if you are on campus:

http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=ip,url&profile=ehost defaultdb=pvh

If you are off-campus and need access, please use our off-campus bookmarklet in order to authenticate:

Let me know if you continue to experience access problems with this or any other journal.

Document Delivery Services/Interlibrary Loan webform

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Q: Please add a DOI field for the interlibrary loan request so that we don’t have to type in the author/title/journal etc.

A: Hi,
Thank you for your feedback concerning the Library’s Document Delivery Services webform, as your idea would certainly make life easier for some patrons. Unfortunately, the underlying software that communicates between the various interlibrary loan management systems as well as the protocols that do automatic document look-ups in the various library catalogues do not utilize DOIs. They depend on parsing the journal title and date information from the ILL web form, as the requesting of items from other libraries is an unmediated process in most cases. That is, no one from SFU handles the request – it is automatically routed to a holding library. Mediation only happens when the system cannot find a library that holds the item requested. Consequently, simply adding a doi field to the web form, and allowing patrons to utilize that and not enter in other citation data, would currently result in the request becoming a mediated request and thus delaying the filling of the request.

However, your idea is a good one for a future iteration / upgrading of the Library’s ILL webform and I will be sure to raise the idea of inserting a doi field into the webform which would resolve the doi and automatically populate the web form.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions, and thank you for using the Library’s Document Delivery Services.

Best regards,
Don Taylor

Alumni access to SFU Library’s online journals

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Q: Hello, I’m interested in accessing the SFU Library’s online journals (not just the limited access that Alumni have now) for personal use, as an Alumni. Is that possible? If so, is there a fee? Thank you!

A: The electronic resources listed at this URL are the only ones that are available to you as an alumni when you are off-campus:

http://www.lib.sfu.ca/my-library/services-for-you/alumni

However, you are welcome to visit any of our campus libraries in person to use our electronic resources.

Thank you for your question. Please feel free to contact us again if you have further questions/comments.

Access to online materials

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Q: I would like to access online materials such as journals, periodicals, etc.
How can I set up access?

A: For the most part, online access to materials licensed by the SFU Library are restricted to current students, faculty and staff. If you are a student, faculty or staff member at SFU, use the links provided by the library under “Journals articles & databases” or “Electronic journals” at the following URL: http://www.lib.sfu.ca/

You will need to authenticate with your SFU computing ID and password.

If you are not affiliated with SFU, you may access some of the electronic resources as a guest when visiting one of our campus libraries:

http://www.lib.sfu.ca/faqs/i-dont-have-an-sfu-id-or-password-how-can-i-use-the-library-computers

Some of our electronic resources are available to SFU alumni. The following webpage lists what is available for alumni as well as some open access databases and journals which are freely available on the web or through your local public library in British Columbia.

http://www.lib.sfu.ca/my-library/services-for-you/alumni

Let me know if you need further clarification or have additional questions. Thanks.

Electronic Resources Librarian.
