Overdue Fines

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

Q. Hi, I am out of province on co-op but am still doing research for my master’s thesis. I have $6.00 in fines and thus cannot request any materials. Is there anyway to pay the fine online? Thank you.

A. Hi

Yes you can call the loans office and pay over the phone with a credit card (so long as it does not need a pin number)

However in this case i just waived $1 from the fines and thus reduced the total to $5. You should now be able to use all of the online services.

You can pay the $5 still owing when you get back into town.

Let me know if you still have problems

take care

Fines Owing and Graduating

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Q. I have a large fine that is in the appeal process. I am submitting my final thesis to complete my Masters degree for Friday. Do I need to have this fine paid off before Friday in order to graduate? And if the appeal goes in my favour, can I just be refunded? I would hate to not graduate because of it, but it’s a large sum of money.

A. Hi,

We have no record of an Appeal under your name. Where and when did you submit it?

As far as paying before graduating, it was my understanding that having an outstanding fine will not prevent your from graduating but you should confirm that with the Registrar.

Library Fines

Q: How can I pay a library fine if I am not able to come to campus? It seems that fines are only payable in person.

A: Hello, If you are not coming to campus, then fines can be paid by telephone (778-782-4345) using Visa or M/C, or you can mail a cheque (payable to SFU Library) to Loans Division, W.A.C.Bennett Library, SFU, Burnaby BC, V5A 1S6

Library Fines

Can I have a friend return my books and pay for my fines for me? Does it have to be me in person?

A: Hi,

Yes, a friend can return your books and pay the fines, however, we would ask that the charges be paid with cash (it is difficult to identify your account if they pay with their own credit/debit card and of course they may not pay with your debit/credit card)

thanks, Sherrie

Overdue email message

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Q: Hi, I have just received an email regarding an overdue book. I returned this book yesterday. So I was wondering why I got this mail.

A: Hi

The book was returned after the library had closed. When the library opened this morning the book was checked in with yesterday’s date. Unfortunately the email program sending out these messages runs before the library opens in the morning so you still got this overdue message. You can safely ignore it as the book has been returned and there was no fine.

take care,

Overdue books

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

Q: hi. last night i had my books overdued and i went to the lib. to hand i the fines. but the librarian said that as long as i come to the lib on this sunday and hand in food instead of fines for the food drive, that offset the fines. but this morning im getting fines overdued email…. is that true that i will not be charged more than $1 if i come to the food drive?

A: Hi

The Fall semester Food for Fines campaign begins this Sunday, November 22, 2009. You may pay off up to $20 worth of fines by contributing food for the SFU food bank. The food items should be non perishable and you will receive a $2 fine reduction for each item (up to a maximum of ten (10) items). Just bring the food to the Loans counter at the Bennett, Belzberg or Surrey campus library and your Fine will be adjusted accordingly.

I hope this answered your question.

Fines on two overdue books

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Q. I recently borrowed two books from your library. Unfortunately I was called back to Ottawa due to an emergency. Everything happened so fast that, in the rush of the moment, I packed the two books and brought them with me. They are now late and I am accruing late charges of 2 dollars per day. I was hoping that you guys would be able to renew the books until my return to Vancouver in late August.
I am sorry for inconveniencing the library and your staff but this was an emergency and I had to leave right away. I realize that it is my responsibility to ensure that I return borrowed items on time, but I was in the midst of an emergency.
Once again, please accept my apologies.

A. I have renewed your books until September 8th. You have $2 in fines for the overdue items.
Take care,
