Q. Hi, I have a quick question. Will the library computers and printers be accessible to students during the extended 24-hour open period? (for example, at 5 a.m. Saturday on Apr. 20th). Hope to hear back from you soon. Thanks.

A. Yes the library computers and printers are accessible during the 24 hour opening.

Request for an automatic stapler at Belzberg Library

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013

Q. Hi,
Would it be possible to have an automatic stapler (like those used in the Bennett library) installed in the Belzberg library as well?
Thanks

A. Hello,

Thanks very much for your suggestion. I will order an automatic stapler for Belzberg Library. We’ll put it between the printer and photocopier and it should be in place in time for printing all those final papers.

Best regards,
Karen

Computer keyboards at Belzberg Library

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Q. Hi

Please consider changing the keyboards many of the computers at the Belzberg library. The letters have faded and the keyboards themselves are quite dirty. For non-touch typists, it is helpful to be able to see the letters on the keys. Thanks.

A. Hello,

Thanks very much for the suggestion. The keyboards will be replaced within the next month. I appreciate your bringing this issue to our attention.

Best regards,

Replacing Copier/Printer Card Readers

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

Q. How about replacing the clunky and noisy copier/printer card readers with svelte ones?

A. I’ll have my technicians investigate and fix any problems regarding noisy equipment.

Thanks, Garth

USB Left on Library Computer

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

Q. I foolishly left my black and red 8G memory stick in one of the Macs on the main floor, to the right of the Ask Us desk. If it’s there I’ll be in at 8AM tomorrow morning to pick it up!

A. Your USB key was still in the Mac computer this morning. It was removed this morning and is at the Checkout desk in the Bennett Library for you to pick up.

Digital Video Camera for Loan

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Q. Hello,
Me and other 4 grad students need to borrow a digital video camera. is there one in Bennett, or we can get it through Bennet from Surrey’s campus? we need it this week.

A. Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately, Bennett Library doesn’t have a digital video camera that you can borrow. It won’t be possible to send a video camera from Surrey to Burnaby either.

However, there is a digital video camera at Surrey that can be borrowed by all SFU students. To see if the video camera will available for when you need it, please send a message to lib-surrey@sfu.ca. Before signing it out, you would need to take the Digital Video Camera quiz first: http://cgi.sfu.ca/~surreywb/tutorials/lib/videoCamera/index.php. You would also need to travel to the Surrey campus. If it’s available, the video camera could be borrowed for 24 hours, with the possibility of renewing it if there are no holds on it.

If you are Education students, there are additional video cameras that you may be able to borrow listed here: http://www.lib.sfu.ca/surrey/education-equipment. If you have any questions, please email lib-surrey@sfu.ca or call 778-782-7411.

I hope this helps.

All the best,
Shane

High Printing/Photocopying Costs

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Q. Is there a specific reason why printing costs are so outrageous at SFU? One quick search of all nearby libraries, public and college/university libraries included, provided me with costs that were HALF or less of what SFU charges to print the exact same thing. Of course, your traffic volume is no concern. After all, it is a major educational institution. This leaves me deprived of ways I can even imagine why you would charge such ridiculous prices for something so meager.

A. The revenues from the printers and photocopiers go to cover the costs of consumables (toner, paper, replacement parts, etc.), amortized cost of the equipment and salaries of the staff who maintain this and other equipment throughout the Library. I can’t speak as to how other institutions are funding their printing services but I can tell you that in addition to the revenues that are generated for the Library from the printers/photocopiers, an additional approximately $115,000 is put into the service.

Cost of Colour Copies

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Q.
Hi,

I’m just wondering how much it costs per sheet to print in colour at the library?

Thank you

A.
Hi, For letter size paper (8.5″ X 11″), it costs $0.35/side at the WAC Bennett Library.

More Shelving Space Required

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Q. I was in the RT (photography) section earlier today and had to yank on two very expensive-looking books (TR 653 A33 2008) to get them off of the shelf. I was unable to replace them without removing smaller adjacent books and I noticed that one of these smaller books had several pages bent back, apparently as a result of being forced onto the packed shelf. I told the person at the front desk about it and was told that this is a known problem. Why isn’t this being addressed? There is plenty of open student space nearby and one bookshelf would be enough to relieve the pressure without impinging too much on the study area.

A. The TR section is particularly packed at this point. Small shifts in the collection do happen all the time to relieve pressure areas such as the TRs. I’ll check with the Head, Access Services as to what is the timeline for that area.

As for swapping out student study space for shelving, that is our current conundrum. Both require more, more, more and we are in a finite position. It is hopeful that when the boiler is removed from the building the space will revert to the Library and we’ll be funded to fit it out so that we can provide both more collection space and more student space. We are in desperate need of both.

Thank you for bringing this section to our attention.

Microfilm Machines Malfunctioning

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Q. Both of the microfilm machines that are attached to computers are broken. The one on the left can’t use fast-forward or rewind very well (the middle gray buttons don’t work at all and I told a librarian about this months ago), and the one on the right now is stuck rewinding constantly.

A. My apology for your inconvenience. I have asked my staff to investigate and rectify any outstanding problems with this equipment asap.
