Ebook usage

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

Q. Hello,
I was wondering whether PhD students have to pay in order to use online books (ebrary). If yes, is there a monthly charge, or the charge depends on how many ebooks we use? Thank you for your help.

A. Hi,

If you are a registered SFU student then the answer is No, you do no have to pay to access ebooks in our catalogue.

Are you having problems accessing them?

Suggestion for New Title Purchase: SEG eBooks

Monday, June 18th, 2012

Title: SEG eBooks
Publisher & where & when published: Society of Exploration Geophysicists
Where you saw this item mentioned: http://www.seg.org/resources/publications/misc/ebookspricing
Your affiliation: SFU Graduate Student

A. Thank you for the suggestion.

However, the cost for the entire e-book collection from the SEG would need to be approved by the relevant liaison librarian and the corresponding department to justify the expense. A list of departments with their relevant liaison librarian and departmental representative is available at: http://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/liaison-librarians

If there is a specific title from this collection that you are interested in, please let us know so we can investigate obtaining a copy in either electronic or print format (if the library does not already own a copy in print format).

Thank you for the suggestion.

Please feel free to contact us again if you have any further questions.

eBook in use

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Q. hi,

I was reading an e-book on EBSCOhost, title: Triumph over shyness: conquering shyness and social anxiety. 40 something pages in, I cannot longer read it because the msg says, “Sorry this eBook is in use.”
What does this mean?

A. Hello,

“Triumph over shyness” is an e-book with a limit of only one simultaneous user.

http://troy.lib.sfu.ca/record=b3920017~S1a

Your browser may have timed out of the session. Therefore, when you tried to go to the next page, either another patron accessed the e-book when you timed out, or if your browser session was reset, EBSCO thought you were a second user. In this case, I would suggest closing your browser completely, delete any browser cookies, clear your cache and try again.

Let me know if you continue to run into problems accessing this e-book.

Thanks.

Borrowing an ebook

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Q. How does one borrow an ebook for a course?

A. Hello,

Simon Fraser University does not have any e-books that need to be checked out. All of our e-books are accessible via the internet on a web browser with your normal SFU ID and password.

Find an e-book in the catalogue and click on the link provided in the record. If you’re off-campus or at home, you will be prompted for your SFU ID and password.

Wherever an e-book is limited to only 1 simultaneous user – it will be stated in a note field:
Here is an example of one: http://troy.lib.sfu.ca/record=b5836408~S1a
When that limit is reached – the site will simply not give you access and ask you to check back later.

If there is no note about 1 simultaneous user, then access is unlimited.

Depending on the e-book, you may encounter limits on saving and printing functions. Some e-books may limit you to saving or printing as few as 10 pages and as much as 80 pages depending on the website and/or the title of the book.

Other e-book websites have no limits and you can download pdf chapters of the book for your personal and educational use.

Here is a partial list of the different e-book websites available at SFU :

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/browse/facets/resource_type/15

Many e-books purchased by the SFU Library are also not designed for any specific e-book reader (like the Amazon Kindle, Kobo or the Sony e-Reader). However, many of these e-book readers are capable of opening and storing pdf documents.

Let me know if you have any more questions about e-books at SFU Library.

Here is the information:

A. Hello,

There appears to be something wrong with the DOI linking.

Try using this URL instead:

http://proxy.lib.sfu.ca/login?url=/http://www.springerlink.com/content/978-1-4471-2279-1

I will ask our cataloguing department to update the link in our records.

ebrary reader not functioning

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Q. eBrary Reader has not been functioning on my laptop now for over a year, and there are books that are only available in this electronic format in the SFU library. Please fix the problem, it is frustrating that I cannot access books that I would like to use in research.

A. Hello,

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been having access problems with ebrary. Please review the following technical requirements to access ebrary, which is also copied below:

http://site.ebrary.com/help/en/faq_main.htm#FAQ_System_Requirements

“What are the system requirements?

Before you begin, check your browser for the following:

JavaScript is enabled.
Cookies are enabled.
Pop-ups are allowed for *.ebrary.com.

If you use firewall or security software, you might need to modify your configuration to prevent it from blocking ebrary.”

If the above does not solve your problem, you can bring your laptop to the Bennett Library’s Ask Us Desk where a technician can review your internet browser settings.

Thanks.
