Problems with accessing an e-journal

Monday, January 14th, 2013

Q. I am trying to access a journal article in the ‘electronic journals’ section.
For some reason I cannot get the article, it says it is embargoed on 2 of the
3 sources, so I tried ALPSP, but it didn’t work. Can you help me access
it?The article is:

From Fetishism to ‘Shocked Disbelief ‘: Economics, Dialectics and Value
Theory. Detail Only Available By: McNally, David. Historical Materialism.
2012, Vol. 20 Issue 3, p9-23. 15p

A. Thanks for your question. I have just successfully followed the ALPSP link through to the article. I wonder if the website was down temporarily when you tried accessing it yesterday? Attached is a copy of the article just in case you have any problems.

Services for Uploading Articles

Monday, June 4th, 2012

Q. Hi, I have a question about using the U.S. based service Dropbox.com for uploading articles to be shared with other SFU researchers. I have some concerns about this practice. Is this consistent with the terms of use for the electronic journals and SFU?

Thanks,

A. Hello,

Using Drop Box to share articles is likely to be considered a violation of the majority of our license terms.

Here is the relevant statement from the CRKN model license, which is the standard license for many of our electronic journals:

http://www.crkn.ca/sites/default/files/CRKNModelLicenseAgreementJan06.pdf

“Section 6. Prohibited Uses

6.1 Neither the Consortium nor Authorized Users nor Walk‐in Users may:

6.1.3 mount or distribute any part of the Licensed Material on any electronic network,
including without limitation the Internet and the World Wide Web without the prior
written consent of the Publisher or except pursuant to any separate agreement as the
Publisher and a Member may enter into.”

You may however (as indicated under Section 3. Usage Rights):

“3.2.4 Distribute single copies of individual articles or items of the Licensed Materials in print
or electronic form to other Authorized Users;” [emphasis added]

To share articles with other Authorized Users (current students, faculty or staff) at SFU, it would be better to provide a link to the article rather than making a copy of the material and posting it to a commercial website, even if it is a secure network.

Here are instructions on how to create stable links to electronic materials licensed by the library:

http://www.lib.sfu.ca/faqs/how-do-i-create-a-stable-link-to-an-online-journal-article-or-electronic-book

Irregardless of any specific license terms, making a digital copy of any copyrighted material, storing the copy and distributing it online, even via a secure network like WebCT, requires express permission from the copyright holder (usually the publisher and author).

I hope that this clarifies the terms of our licenses and use of copyrighted electronic materials.

Let me know if you require any further information.

Access to download a paper

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Q. Hello. I am an SFU student trying to download this paper: Qualities of thoughtful social studies classes: an empirical profile – from the Journal of Curriculum Studies, Volume 22, Issue 3, 1990. http://www.tandfonline.com.proxy.lib.sfu.ca/doi/abs/10.1080/0022027900220304

Do I not have access to this?
Thanks

A. Hello,

According to the holdings information for the Journal of Curriculum Studies, our access entitlement begins with 1997 at volume 29, issue no. 1.

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CJDB/BVAS/journal/142639

We have print holdings for the back issues of this title in the Bound Journals section of Bennett Library, located on the 6th floor:

http://troy.lib.sfu.ca/record=b1647302~S1a

Journals are shelved alphabetically by the name of the journal and photocopiers are located on the 6th floor as well.

Please feel free to contact us again if you have further questions.

Alumni Privileges

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

Q. Hi, I would like to know, as a recent graduate and, now, alumni, for how long will I still have access to online journals and journal databases through my SFU account? Thanks.

A. Hello,

Officially your library privileges expire two weeks into the next semester. Your alumni library privileges will come into effect when Senate awards your degree/diploma.

A description of library services available to Alumni is listed here:

http://www.lib.sfu.ca/my-library/services-for-you/alumni

For the most part access to the electronic resources from off-campus is not available to alumni except for the following listed databases:

http://www.lib.sfu.ca/my-library/services-for-you/alumni#electronic

However, almost all of the electronic resources are available to you with Alumni status if you are physically in one of our campus libraries and using one of the library computers.

IT Services may have a slightly longer grace period before they disable your SFU Computing ID and password.

Thank you for your question. Please feel free to contact us again if you need more information.

Access to Taylor and Francis Journals

Monday, July 4th, 2011

Q. I’m having trouble accessing certain Taylor and Francis journals, either the T&F page comes up saying page not found or if I can get into the journal I am asked for a log in to download articles (this is when accessed VIA SFU). Hope you can resolve this.

A. Apologies for the difficulty. The Taylor and Francis journals all moved to a brand new platform and website: from www.informaworld.com to www.tandfonline.com and we have redirects in place.

However, there may still be some outstanding issues from the migration.

Can you tell which titles you are having difficulties with and then I can investigate further?

Thanks very much.
Sandra Wong, Electronic Resources Librarian.

Follow-up:
Q. Hi Sandra

I was searching Journal of Homosexuality and I think Journal of lesbian and Gay Psychotherapy.

A. The links should all be working now:

J of Homosexuality

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CJDB/BVAS/journal/140884

J of Gay and Lesbian Psychotherapy

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CJDB/BVAS/journal/152290

J of Gay and Lesbian Social Services

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CJDB/BVAS/journal/140873

Let me know if you continue to have difficulties.

Thanks. Sandra.

Accessing Online Article

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Q. Hello,

I am trying to access an online article from Advanced Energy Materials
(Wiley) but it seems that SFU does not allow access to it. Is there any way
for me to get some papers/articles from this journal or can the Library
purchase the access ?

A. Unfortunately, the SFU Library does not have a subscription to this journal.

However, it looks like Wiley is providing free access to the articles in the first issue:

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/aenm.v1.1/issuetoc

If you want an article from the second issue, then you’ll need to use the Library’s Inter Library loan service to obtain a copy.

Here is a link to the Inter Library Loan form:

http://godot.lib.sfu.ca:7888/godot/blank.cgi?hold_tab_dt=JOURNAL

Proposals for new journal subscriptions must come to the liaison librarian from the departmental library representative, because of the ongoing commitment of the library budget for that department. Often the acquisition of a new subscription requires that another subscription of equivalent value be cancelled.

Please contact your departmental library representative to inquire whether there is enough interest in subscribing to this title – a list of liaison librarians and departmental library reps are at this URL:

http://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/liaison-librarians

Let me know if you require any additional assistance.

Thank you for the feedback.

Accessing ISI Web of Knowledge

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Q. Hi, How can I access ISI Web of Knowledge? I’m a grad student at SFU. Thanks.

A. Hello,

A link to all our databases is listed on the library’s home page www.lib.sfu.ca under Find – Journal articles & Databases.

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/

You can browse by subject using the drop down menu or browse alphabetically by the name of the database. If you are off-campus, you will be prompted for your SFU computing ID and password.

Web of Knowledge is the name of the platform for a several databases from Thomson Reuters.

Web of Science:

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/resource/5662

Zoological Record:

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/resource/5566

Biosis Citation Index

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/resource/10431

Journal Citation Reports on the Web:

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/resource/5610

In Web of Science and Zoological Record, there is a link to a beta preview for a new Web of Knowledge platform – which is scheduled for full release sometime this summer. Only Biosis Citation Index is fully released on the new platform.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks.

Free Journal Access

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Q. Dear library staff,

I’m a Ph.D. candidate in Biological Sciences. Recently, I submitted a manuscript to the journal Methods in Ecology and Evolution, which is a relatively new journal published by the British Ecological Society. Their editorial staff wrote the email pasted below, which offers free access to the first two years of the journal for institutions whose faculty/students have submitted manuscripts there. I believe this is going to be a high impact journal (like other BES journals) and since it is free, I am writing to request that SFU take up this free trial offer. This link is here: to request free access to MEE: http://bit.ly/eXHURF. Could you please let me know if you decide to make this request?

Thanks for your time.

A. Thanks for sending this request to the SFU library. We currently have free access to all issues of Methods of Ecology and Evolution, linked from our e-journals list and the library catalogue. As with other free or trial journals, we’ll track the level of use by SFU readers over the next couple of years. Once the publisher is ready to begin charging for subscriptions, we’ll review the use at SFU and the proposed subscription price to determine the value of subscribing. I’m also passing your request along to Leslie Rimmer, liaison librarian for Biological Sciences, so she can monitor our use of this title.

Best regards,

Accessing Journals Online

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Q. I am trying to access journals online, through the SFU library catalogue, however when I open an article it takes me to the page with the link and where the link is supposed to be it says ‘parallel server not found’ in red. (this is supposed to be the link that guides you to the actual journal)

A. Can you please tell me the name of the journal and provide the URL from the catalogue so I can investigate this error?

Thanks very much.
Sandra Wong
Electronic Resources Librarian.

Further comments…

Hi Sandra,

I went to the live chat and reported the error and they said it was a problem with the server. As far as I can tell it has been fixed.

Thank you for the reply,

Suggestion for New Title Purchase: Upping the Anti

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Q. I think the journal, Upping the Anti would be an excellent addition to our library’s collection. It is one of the few publications that seeks young First Nations scholars to submit, and is generally the only academic journal that covers current Native land issues. Upping the Anti also covers many other issues and would be invaluable to students of political science or students interested in social movements. I think you can subscribe at www.uppingtheanti.org. Please subscribe! Thanks.

A. Thanks for sending this suggestion to the Library. I was not aware of this publication. It offers very inexpensive subscriptions for libraries, is Canadian, and as an outlet for First Nations scholars, we’d be pleased to add it to our collection. I will initiate a subscription today.

Best regards,
