The United Way Burnaby Book Sale

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

Hi there!
I was unable to make the United Way book drive this year. I had heard that  the library was purging their “B” section (philosophy and psychology genre). I was wondering what happens to the books that were not purchased. Do they
move to the next sale location or does SFU keep them until the next sale? If SFU keeps them, when is the next sale?

A. From time to time the Library does indeed “weed” its shelves of duplicate material in order to create space, and this year we were working in the B’s. Books that aren’t sold at the UW Book Sale are passed on to other charities or organizations that request them. A small number are retained for next year’s sale. The United Way Burnaby Book Sale takes place every year around the 3rd week of November. For information on SFU’s annual United Way Campaign, see http://www.sfu.ca/unitedway.html

Best,

Elaine

Q. I am research staff and am leaving the university. I have physiology, nutrition and toxicology text books – about 2 long shelf lengths of them. Would you like a donation?

A. Thank you for thinking of the Library. We do not accept textbooks but should you like to bring the volumes to the Library I will arrange for them to be placed in the United Way sale. Of course I am on the 7th floor.

Books for Donation

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

Q. I have a large science fiction/fantasy collection and a small history collection (mostly second world war). They belonged to my deceased husband and are currently in storage but I would like to see them being used. Any idea who might be interested in having them?

A. Thank you for your email. For the science fiction books you may wish to check with your local public library;they may have an interest or some suggestions. For the history books dealing with WW2 perhaps you could ring me at the number below with some details on the books. Thank you very much for thinking of SFU.

Regards,Eric.

Overdue Fines

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

Q. Hi, I am out of province on co-op but am still doing research for my master’s thesis. I have $6.00 in fines and thus cannot request any materials. Is there anyway to pay the fine online? Thank you.

A. Hi

Yes you can call the loans office and pay over the phone with a credit card (so long as it does not need a pin number)

However in this case i just waived $1 from the fines and thus reduced the total to $5. You should now be able to use all of the online services.

You can pay the $5 still owing when you get back into town.

Let me know if you still have problems

take care

Book Donations Drop-box

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

Q. Hello, Will there be a book donations box available at the Bennett and/or Surrey libraries in Sept. 2011? I have a few books lying around that I know someone could get more use out of. Cheers!

A. The United Way drop off box at the Bennett Library is usually in place in early October and I assume it’s the same at Surrey.

If you would like to drop them off before October, you can drop them off at the Library Management office, WAC Bennett Library, 7th floor: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:00pm.

Also, you can contact Jeff Rudd in Physics at 778-782-3775; he organizes and sorts all of the books for the United Way sale.

Regards,
Catherine

Donation of Psychology Theses

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

Q. I am vacating an office (Burnaby campus) and have several bound hard cover theses (MA and PhD) from the Univ. Western Ontario (London Ont). I am reluctant to discard them because they might be of interest to researchers here. Most are Psychology theses. Would they be of interest to anyone here?

A. Your offer of UWO psychology theses has been referred to yours truly. Please do send them along to me and I’ll arrange to have them checked against our holdings and if there are any not to be added to the collection will be donated to the United Way sale. I hope this works for you. Thank you very much.

Donation of Items by Evelyn Whitell

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Q. I have fallen heir to several books, papers and letters produced by Evelyn Whitell who lived in Vancouver on various occasions: ie 19teens and likely early 1920’s, 1924 -26, 1942 (likely earlier) to 1950. There seems to be a market for the books but I would prefer to give them away if the collection was kept together. Whitell was involved with the Unity Church and became known to my mother’s family by reading stories to children Saturday mornings. The more interesting letters describe visits to Japan and China in 1926. There is one photograph of her as part of a Christmas Card. She is shown sitting in front of her house at 1405 W 39th, Vancouver. If you have any interest in this collection I would be pleased to forward a detailed list of the material.

A. Thank you very much for thinking of SFU. Yes I am very much interested in Evelyn Whitell’s papers. Please do send me your detailed list. I look forward to hearing from you.

Journals for Donation

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Q. I’m the Editor of JABES (Journal of Agricultural, Biological, and Environmental Statistics). As such, the publisher forwards me BOUND copies of the volumes for which I am editor. I have no need of these. Are these useful for the Library? I have bound copies of Volume 13 (2008), Volume 14 (2009) and likely will also get Volume 15 (2010). The binding is in green. If useful, where do I send them. If you need unbound issues, I also have these going back to V.4.

A. Hi,

Thank-you for your offer of the Bound volumes Journal of Agricultural, Biological, and Environmental Statistics.

The Library has the current Journals in our collection and as we no longer hold paper volumes after 5 years, We no longer bind older journals
For earlier articles we have online access via Jstor : http://troy.lib.sfu.ca/search~S1?/s=jabes/sjabes/1%2C1%2C2%2CB/frameset&FF=sjabes&2%2C%2C2

Perhaps another home can be found for them.

DVD Donations

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Q: Hi, I was wondering if the Bennett Library accepts DVD donations for their collection? I have quite a few DVDs in good shape that I am no longer using and some of which are not in SFU’s catalog (for example: Mad Men season one, Gosford Park, and some old 1960s films). If the library would like the DVDs, where should I drop them off? Thanks!

A: Hi

Thank you for enquiring about donating dvds to the SFU Library. We are always pleased to review all gifts.
The individual to contact regarding gifts is Eric Swanick, Head of Special Collections and Gifts Librarian, as he is the librarian who handles the initial reception of all gifts to the Library.

Eric’s contact information is:

Again, thank you very much for your generosity.
Best regards,
