A. Thank you for contacting the SFU Library with your purchase suggestion. We normally purchase films for the collection only when they are requested by professors or instructors in association with courses and areas of research. If this request is for a class you are taking, please let me know. Otherwise, I would recommend contacting your public library with this request.

Interlibrary Loan Books

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

Q. I requested a book through interlibrary loan and I got an email a few days ago that the book is ready for pickup, but I am away right now and will not be able to pick it up until Aug 31. Would it be possible for me to pick it up at that time?

A. Yes you can pick up your interlibrary loan book on August 31. However, the book is due back on September 5 – you could keep it for a few extra days until, say, September 7 or 10th if you’d like.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Interlibrary Loan Books

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

Q. I would like to request two inter-library loans for two books which I will need on the 3rd of September. However, I am not in Canada until the 2nd of  September. Could you please tell me for how many days the library keeps the delivered inter-library books? How could I deal with this issue? Thank you.

A. The Library keeps interlibrary loan books on the pick-up/hold shelf for the length of the loan period. So, for example, if a book arrived on August 25 and was due to be returned on September 15, it would stay on the pick-up shelf waiting to be picked up by the patron until September 15. Due to your not being at SFU until September 2, you should probably wait until August 23 or 24 at the earliest before making your request, as interlibrary loan books that come from Western Canadian libraries arrive between 2-7 days of being requested.
If your request is for a more harder to obtain item, it will take longer to arrive as we’ll have to go farther afield and mediate the request (have humans actually search for it rather it being an automated request).
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Suggestion for New Title Purchase: The Introvert Advantage: How to Thrive in an Extrovert World and Quiet: The Power of Introverts

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

Q. Would the library please consider purchasing the following books?
Title: The Introvert Advantage and How to Thrive in an Extrovert World
Author: Marti Olsen Laney Psy.D.
Paperback: 330 pages
Publisher: Workman Publishing Company; 1 edition (February 1, 2002)

A. Two titles that you requested The Introvert Advantage: How to Thrive in an Extrovert World and Quiet: The Power of Introverts are actually out of scope of the SFU Collections Policy as they both belong to the General/Popular category, but I have forwarded your request to our Psychology librarian for her consideration.

New Edition Textbooks

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

We were using a history text from the SFU Bennett library for basic reading yesterday and there is some note we like to mention. It is not clear if the library keeps a record of all its holdings in check but the material we used did not seem to be a genuine copy of the text. The fact that we had used a former edition of the material suggest the copy on hand is of lesser quality. The new edition shows much inconsistency in style and contents, across many sections. Do not the library would verify that it is keeping it collections in a more secure condition.

A. I am sorry to hear that the library does not have the latest edition of the text you were using for your history class.  Unfortunately, we do not normally buy textbooks unless requested by a professor, so it is quite possible that we do not always have the latest editions of textbooks. However, if the book you were using with your group was not a textbook, I would ask you to please send me the title and author’s name, and we may consider purchasing a new edition. It may have also happened that a copy of the new edition went missing from our collection at some point in the past. Please send me more information about the book, and I will be happy to take a look at it.

Best regards,
Ivana

A. Unfortunately, we do not normally buy textbooks unless requested by a professor, so at this time we are not considering purchasing a new edition of “Quantitative Chemical Analysis”.
