Library Resources for Artificial Intelligence

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Q. i need some information about artificial intelligence??
i have to write a persuasive paper

can u also suggest me some books on the topic ?

A. Hi, Depending on the details of your assignment, and what class this is for, you may find one of our Research Guides to be useful. For instance we have put together the following guide for ENSC 105 students: http://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/subject-guides/engineering-science/ensc-105, which includes strategies for getting started as well as links to some helpful resources. The “Finding Background Information” section might be the best place to begin gathering information for your paper.

Searching for “artificial intelligence” using the Library Search tool (the default search at www.lib.sfu.ca) turns up some books which might be of interest, including one which is on reserve for CMPT 310 D100: Artificial intelligence : a modern approach / Stuart J. Russell and Peter Norvig (see http://troy.lib.sfu.ca/record=b5496001~S1a ). This search will also lead you to additional library guides (see the lower part of the right-hand column on the results page).

I hope that this will help to get you started. If you need more assistance, please feel free to phone or drop by any of our reference desks in person (http://www.lib.sfu.ca/my-library/services-for-you/reference), or email us using the form at http://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/ask-a-librarian with a little more information about the course and your assignment, and we’ll get back to you.

All the best,

Suggestion for New Title Purchase: Public Policy in Canada: An Introduction 6ed

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Author: Lydia Miljan
Title: Public Policy in Canada: An Introduction 6ed
Publisher & where & when published: OUP, 2012
Where you saw this item mentioned: email from OUP re new edition
Your affiliation: SFU Faculty

A. Hi,

I have purchased Public Policy in Canada: An Introduction, 6th edition, for SFU Library. You will receive an email when it is ready for you to pick up from Bennett Library. Books can take up to 6 weeks to arrive, depending on availability, but I have asked that it be ordered rush. The Public Policy collection is largely housed at Belzberg Library (Vancouver), and it is for this library that the book will be catalogued. Were you hoping that your students would be able to access this book at Bennett Library? In that case it would be best to put the book on reserve once it is available: http://www.lib.sfu.ca/my-library/services-for-you/placing-reserves

DVD/CD collection purchased from Videomatica

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Q. I noticed in a recent news article that several thousand dvds/videos from Videomatica have been acquired by SFU. Where will this collection be housed (which campus?), will the materials be available for regular loan to students/staff/faculty, and if so, when can we expect to see them on the shelves?

A. Indeed, the SFU Library acquired over 3000 documentary dvds and vhs from Videomatica. These items are currently in the process of being organized, catalogued and processed by the Cataloguing Division and they will eventually be housed in the Media Resource Centre in the Bennett Library, but as with all circulating Bennett Library materials they will be requestable from the Surrey and Vancouver campuses. The timeline for when they will be available is a little fluid, as I’m sure you can understand, but the current plan is that they will be available before 2013.

Don Taylor

Digital Video Camera for Loan

Friday, March 30th, 2012

Q. Hello,
Me and other 4 grad students need to borrow a digital video camera. is there one in Bennett, or we can get it through Bennet from Surrey’s campus? we need it this week.

A. Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately, Bennett Library doesn’t have a digital video camera that you can borrow. It won’t be possible to send a video camera from Surrey to Burnaby either.

However, there is a digital video camera at Surrey that can be borrowed by all SFU students. To see if the video camera will available for when you need it, please send a message to lib-surrey@sfu.ca. Before signing it out, you would need to take the Digital Video Camera quiz first: http://cgi.sfu.ca/~surreywb/tutorials/lib/videoCamera/index.php. You would also need to travel to the Surrey campus. If it’s available, the video camera could be borrowed for 24 hours, with the possibility of renewing it if there are no holds on it.

If you are Education students, there are additional video cameras that you may be able to borrow listed here: http://www.lib.sfu.ca/surrey/education-equipment. If you have any questions, please email lib-surrey@sfu.ca or call 778-782-7411.

I hope this helps.

All the best,
Shane
