Dublin IMPAC Literary Award

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Q. Did the SFU Library have a nomination for the Dublin IMPAC literary award? If so, who/what was it?

A. Hi, The short answer is no. We are not currently a participating library in this award but thanks for bringing this to to our attention. It’s the first I’ve heard of it. I had a look at their webpage (http://www.impacdublinaward.ie/index.htm) and it does seem very public library focussed but there are a few other academic libraries in the mix.

I’ve emailed the organizers to find out what kind of commitment is required and what the process is to be vetted as a “nominating” library. When I hear from them we’ll look into becoming involved. If we do participate, would you be willing to participate in the process?

Events in the Convocation Mall

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Q. I am an exchange student over from the University of Bath in England. I have been trying to find out who authorises events on the Mall outside the library (I have asked several staff at the library and they advised me to contact through this form), but have so far failed. I hope you can help me.

I have a simple question to ask. I find it incredible that SFU authorises loud noisy music events (no matter the purpose) to take place on ordinary school days and nights, when people are trying to study in the library and need peace and quiet. I was just on the 7th floor and had to move because the music from yet another charity event began to play really loud, making it hard to hear one’s own thoughts, let alone study. Let’s just remind ourselves that this is an education institution above all else.

I would like to speak to the management if not to simply hear the kind of reasoning that has justified this madness happening.

A. Hi,

Convocation Mall booking is under the office of Student Services. I’ve cc’d both Terri Pattinson, who handles the bookings and Tim Rahilly (Associate VP, Students) with your feedback.

High Printing/Photocopying Costs

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Q. Is there a specific reason why printing costs are so outrageous at SFU? One quick search of all nearby libraries, public and college/university libraries included, provided me with costs that were HALF or less of what SFU charges to print the exact same thing. Of course, your traffic volume is no concern. After all, it is a major educational institution. This leaves me deprived of ways I can even imagine why you would charge such ridiculous prices for something so meager.

A. The revenues from the printers and photocopiers go to cover the costs of consumables (toner, paper, replacement parts, etc.), amortized cost of the equipment and salaries of the staff who maintain this and other equipment throughout the Library. I can’t speak as to how other institutions are funding their printing services but I can tell you that in addition to the revenues that are generated for the Library from the printers/photocopiers, an additional approximately $115,000 is put into the service.

Library Workstation Shutdown Warning

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Q. A few evenings ago, near library closing time, the computer I was working on closed down with only a few SECONDS warning. I lost about an hour’s work. Please make sure library computers give sufficient warning before shut-down. About 15 minutes warning seems about right.

A. I’m sorry to hear you suffered a loss of data. I’m guessing you are using one of the northern PCs on the third floor of the library at Burnaby. Those machines are under management of computing services, and I’m told they currently do not have a timeout value set.

For all the library workstations in public areas in the third-floor central area, and on the other floors, there is a warning that is displayed 15 min. previous to the shutdown of the workstations prior to closing. If you experienced this problem on one of these PCs, please let me know the name of the computer and we will test it out and resolve the issue.

We do work together to try to get our images as close to one another as possible and somehow this detail was missed. I have forwarded your message on to computing services as I know they are rebuilding a new image for the new semester.

Chesterton Materials

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Q. I just wanted to say that I am very pleased that SFU Burnaby has a copy of Ian Ker’s new exhaustive biography of G.K. Chesterton. Chesterton was a brilliant writer and thinker who should be more famous in post-secondary circles than he is, especially since his works touch on many subjects: theology, apologetics, history, social commentary, literary and artistic criticism and politics. Here’s hoping students will be able to enjoy learning more about Chesterton through this biography and the other Chesterton books available at the Bennett Library!

A. Thanks for the feedback. And “we are pleased” that you found this volume helpful! If there are other Chesterton materials that you feel we should be collecting, please feel free to make further suggestions.

Assignments Saved on Library Computers

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Q. Hi, I was doing my research assignment on one of the computers at school today. I opened my file from my harddrive, and was doing my assignment from there. When I finished, I saved my work before leaving. But, what I didn’t check was whether or not my work was saved onto my flashdrive; right now I only have a temporary file saved onto there, which I have no idea what that means, but I don’t have my work. I saw a notice by each of the computers saying that files saved onto the computers will not be saved. Does the computer’s settings go back to its default settings, or erasing all new memory everyday? I really hope not. If there’s anything I can do to retrieve my work back, please please please pleaaaseee let me know!! It would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

A. Hi, Unfortunately the odds are very slim. Could you tell me which computer you were using and we can take a look. Time is of the essence since automated scripts run that delete everything from the hard drive each day. This may have occurred at midnight last night but we will check the computer that you specify.
