Returning Books at Various SFU Libraries

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Q. Can I return a book at any campus library? or would I need to return it to the designated library I checked it out from? Thank you.

A. Except for Reserves material, borrowed items can be returned to any SFU library and they will be checked in immediately. Only Reserves need to be returned to the library from which they were borrowed.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Using the Library After Graduation

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Q. Hi, I am graduating after the Spring term and will be convocating in June. I would like to know how I may retain the privilege to use the library such as checking-out books or media collections. I see that my account has expired since May 10 and I believe alumni have the ability to borrow books after graduation. Thanks for the clarification.

A. Hi, Once you graduate your alumni record will be automatically loaded. I have temporarily changed your record to alumni status so that you can continue to borrow books until that time. I have set the expiry date to June 30th by which time your alumni record should have loaded into our system.

Please note that while alumni can check out books they cannot unfortunately check out material from the Media Resource Centre.

Follow-up on Burnt Out Lights

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Q. Hi,

This item from Feb 2011 has not yet been resolved. Thanks

“Q. Hi,

The florescent lamps above the computer workstation on the S.E corner of the
set of 12 workstations on the 6th floor are burned out.

Thanks

A. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Our facilities department
has been notified and the lights will be replaced asap.

Garth Lauer

A. Each lighting coffer in this area has 4 light fixtures. Only 2 light fixtures per coffer are turned on as part of our energy management program. All of the lights that are programmed to be on in this area are currently working. If you encounter any additional lights off in this area, please try the light switches that are located directly across from the computers beside the stairwell door.

Thanks, Garth

Shortened Loan Period When a Book is Requested

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Q. Hi I have a book on loan right now and its due in September. But I was wondering if the due date will be shorten if another student requests the book?

A. Hi

The short answer is – Yes – a semester loan book (due in September) will have its due date shortened if requested by another patron.

When you borrow a semester loan book you are given a due date for the beginning of the following semester. However the “guaranteed” loan period is only three (3) weeks. What this means is that if someone else places a hold on the book you will receive an email with a modified due date as follows

1) If you have not had the book yet for 3 weeks then the new due date will be 3 weeks from the time the book was checked out

OR

2) If you have already had the book for 3 weeks then the new due date will be one (1) week from the date the hold was placed in order to give you time to get the book back to the library.

Hope that is clearer.

Accessing Online Article

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Q. Hello,

I am trying to access an online article from Advanced Energy Materials
(Wiley) but it seems that SFU does not allow access to it. Is there any way
for me to get some papers/articles from this journal or can the Library
purchase the access ?

A. Unfortunately, the SFU Library does not have a subscription to this journal.

However, it looks like Wiley is providing free access to the articles in the first issue:

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/aenm.v1.1/issuetoc

If you want an article from the second issue, then you’ll need to use the Library’s Inter Library loan service to obtain a copy.

Here is a link to the Inter Library Loan form:

http://godot.lib.sfu.ca:7888/godot/blank.cgi?hold_tab_dt=JOURNAL

Proposals for new journal subscriptions must come to the liaison librarian from the departmental library representative, because of the ongoing commitment of the library budget for that department. Often the acquisition of a new subscription requires that another subscription of equivalent value be cancelled.

Please contact your departmental library representative to inquire whether there is enough interest in subscribing to this title – a list of liaison librarians and departmental library reps are at this URL:

http://www.lib.sfu.ca/help/liaison-librarians

Let me know if you require any additional assistance.

Thank you for the feedback.
Sandra Wong, Electronic Resources Librarian.

Reciprocal Borrowing Privileges

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Q. Hello, I’m full time graduate student at Queen’s University in Kingston, ON. I’m currently doing research for my thesis at a company near SFU Burnaby. What would I need to do to borrow books from the SFU library? Thanks.

A. Hi,
We offer reciprocal borrowing privileges for Queens university students who are currently enrolled at that institution.

In order to obtain sfu borrowing privileges you would need to come to the circulation desk at one of the three university campuses and show staff a valid Queens University ID card (if this card does not include a picture then you would also need valid picture ID as well). This Queen ID card should include an expiry date. If a date is not present on the card then you would need to demonstrate to the staff that you are currently enrolled at Queens. This can usually be done by signing onto your account at your home library or university and showing a valid expiry date or enrollment information.

If you obtained a IUBP (Inter-University Borrowing Project) card from Queens before you left you can use this as well.

If you need any further information feel free to contact me
