Women’s Washroom

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Q. It seems like the women’s washroom on the 6th floor in Bennett library hasn’t been cleaned for 3 days. I noticed that garbage cans are emptied daily and I am wondering why toilets and sinks are not cleaned everyday. Can this be fixed right away?

A. Thank you for your feedback. The toilets are supposed to be cleaned daily during the midnight shift. Thanks for letting us know that this has not been occurring on the 6th floor. We will contact the cleaning contractor and request that they get back on schedule.

Sorry for the delay in responding.

Best regards,
Todd

Fines Owing and Graduating

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Q. I have a large fine that is in the appeal process. I am submitting my final thesis to complete my Masters degree for Friday. Do I need to have this fine paid off before Friday in order to graduate? And if the appeal goes in my favour, can I just be refunded? I would hate to not graduate because of it, but it’s a large sum of money.

A. Hi,

We have no record of an Appeal under your name. Where and when did you submit it?

As far as paying before graduating, it was my understanding that having an outstanding fine will not prevent your from graduating but you should confirm that with the Registrar.

take care

Reciprocal Borrowing with Justice Institute

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Q. Would it be possible to have reciprocal lending privileges with the Justice Institute of B.C.? Their library has some good resources on criminology. They say that they have reciprocal arrangements with Douglas College (and unspecified other institutions), but not with SFU.

A. Hi,
Thank you for your message regarding reciprocal borrowing with the Justice Institute. I don’t have a definitive answer for you right now regarding why SFU Library does not have a reciprocal borrowing arrangement with the Justice Institute. The JI, although a member of the consortia of BC post-secondary libraries, does not participate in the reciprocal borrowing agreement in place between members, and I imagine this is due to concerns over possible over-use of their small specialized collection by non JI students and staff. I will follow up today and and next week with SFU and the JI to find out if there had been a previous attempt to have reciprocal borrowing and will also investigate what would be involved in setting up reciprocal borrowing with the Justice Institute. Also, although it’s not as fast as going to JI and signing out material right there, you can request JI materials through the SFU Library’s interlibrary loan service ( http://www.lib.sfu.ca/find/document-delivery/request-form ). I will send you a follow up email next week when I have further information.
Best regards,

Eating in the Library

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Q. Hungry students seem to prioritize their desire to eat over the decorum appropriate to the library. It is a common experience for me, even in the ’silent study’ area, to be distracted by the sounds of someone eating. Given that a large lobby cafe exists 1 minute walk away, as well as a food court and other restaurants and cafes in the mall, it’s quite ridiculous that these hillbillies are unable to recognize that they aren’t studying at home. Annoying!

A. Hello:

I am sorry you are being distracted by people eating in the Library. Because students are so busy, and need to eat as well as study, we do allow food to be consumed in the study areas of the Library. If you would find them helpful, please ask to borrow a pair of noise-canceling headphones at the Loans Desk.

Natalie

Accessing ISI Web of Knowledge

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Q. Hi, How can I access ISI Web of Knowledge? I’m a grad student at SFU. Thanks.

A. Hello,

A link to all our databases is listed on the library’s home page www.lib.sfu.ca under Find – Journal articles & Databases.

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/

You can browse by subject using the drop down menu or browse alphabetically by the name of the database. If you are off-campus, you will be prompted for your SFU computing ID and password.

Web of Knowledge is the name of the platform for a several databases from Thomson Reuters.

Web of Science:

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/resource/5662

Zoological Record:

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/resource/5566

Biosis Citation Index

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/resource/10431

Journal Citation Reports on the Web:

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/resource/5610

In Web of Science and Zoological Record, there is a link to a beta preview for a new Web of Knowledge platform – which is scheduled for full release sometime this summer. Only Biosis Citation Index is fully released on the new platform.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks.

Library Laptops

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Q. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that the laptops are very out of date. But even worse is that so many times I’ve been turned away from borrowing one because they’re all out. Maybe if the library were to start replacing the older laptops we would benefit from having more up-to-date technology and more available technology.

Please know that I am taking the time to write this because having laptops to borrow in the first place is a great service and incredibly helpful and I would like to see this service become more readily available.

Thank you.

A. Hello,

In actual fact the laptops are NOT very out of date; they are approximately one year and a half old, halfway through their refresh cycle of three years.

We are aware that the laptop checkout service is very popular, and have managed to come up with 4 more check out laptops that we will be adding to our checkout pool.

Unfortunately due to budget constraints it is not possible at this time to increase the number of laptops that we have on loan, beyond the 4 extra laptops mentioned earlier.

We are investigating other options, such as an image one can overlay on their own laptop that duplicates the image on the checkout laptops.

Also, there are many more departments on campus besides the library. Perhaps they could also offer some sort of laptop checkout service, if students demonstrate the need for such a service at those departments.
