Printing on Both Sides

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Q.
Is there any good reason why “print on both sides” is not set by default?
There are many good reasons why it should be.
Please tell me the reasons why it is not.
Please respond to my question.

A.
We at the library keep our computer images and our printers compatible with campus computing services.
I have forwarded your question on to campus computing services but have not yet heard a response.
So if you need an answer now, the answer is in order to keep our computers compatible with campus computing services we follow their policy.
Currently the policy is single-sided printing for black-and-white printers double-sided printing for color.
You will notice we have exactly the same image as the computing services labs, and use exactly the same printers.
Until such time as the policy changes that is the way it will stay.
If you want to follow this further, please feel free to contact campus computing services.

Accessing Journals Online

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Q. I am trying to access journals online, through the SFU library catalogue, however when I open an article it takes me to the page with the link and where the link is supposed to be it says ‘parallel server not found’ in red. (this is supposed to be the link that guides you to the actual journal)

A. Can you please tell me the name of the journal and provide the URL from the catalogue so I can investigate this error?

Thanks very much.
Sandra Wong
Electronic Resources Librarian.

Further comments…

Hi Sandra,

I went to the live chat and reported the error and they said it was a problem with the server. As far as I can tell it has been fixed.

Thank you for the reply,

Belzberg Library Hours

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Q. I love this library, and I was just wondering why it’s not open later? On weekends, for instance, it seems like there are a fair amount of students there around 5pm, who would gladly study well into the evening.

A. Hi,

Thanks very much for your comments and suggestion. We’d also love to have the Belzberg Library open later, but this would require an increase in our budget to staff the library. We’ve tried to maximize hours during the week when classes are in session, although we do recognize that many students like to study on the weekends. Until we are able to expand library hours, you are welcome to study in other areas of the Vancouver campus – the Harbour Centre building is open until 6:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and I will forward your suggestion to SFU Vancouver administrators to consider whether there is a way to extend this.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly at marotz@sfu.ca or 778-782-5054 if you would like to discuss this further.

regards,
Karen Marotz

Photocopier in LAM

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Q. Hi — the photocopier in the basement, for the LAM collection, is badly placed right beside a wall, which makes it very difficult to copy pages in large bound serials and books. Could you please move it out a foot or two?

Many thanks,

A. Thanks you for pointing this out. I will have the copier moved forward to accommodate larger materials.

Thanks, Garth

Finding aid for Gerry Gilbert fonds?

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Q.
Is there a more detailed finding aid available for the Gerry Gilbert fonds?

A.
I have received your request concerning Gerry Gilbert finding aids. There are in-house listings of the first four accruals of the Gilbert fonds. These require additional work before they can be posted to the web. Also additional Gilbert materials have recently been donated to the collection. Is there something specific on which I may assist?
And of course you are most welcome to visit Special Collections if that is a possibility.
Best wishes in your research.

Printing Adobe InDesign Files from Library Computers

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Hi I got a Adobe Indesign project on my mac laptop and wanna get color print out in library, but it seems that the mac in lib are not available for Adobe Indesign, is it true? what should I do?

A. Hi,

You can find the instructions for printing to any computer lab printer from your laptop via the following link. http://www.sfu.ca/itservices/technical/computerlabs/burnaby_labs/lab_services/printing.html. Near the bottom is a PDF detailing how to do this with a mac.

There are also IC technicians posted in the labs who can assist you with this. As well, there is a printer version of the PDF posted near the IC tech desks.

Hope this helps,
