Java on Library Lending Laptops

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Q. Dear Library Admin,

I wanted to know if a technician could please install java on the library laptops? I can’t do my math homework without it and I need to bring a laptop to the math workshop if I seek assistance with the online assignment components (LON-CAPA). This is the response I received:

Sorry, the GeoGebra Applet could not be started. Please make sure that Java 1.4.2 (or later) is installed and active in your browser (Click here to install Java now)

I would really appreciate a response, and possible actions that might be taken.

Thank you.

A. Hi,

I am responding regarding your issue with Java on the library lending laptops. We do have have Java installed on the laptops in the library. There was an update to Java this week and a few of the systems seem to have encountered a bit of a glitch with the update. Unfortunately we were not able to detect this issue when the update was rolled out and you were using one of those few systems. Whenever you have an issue with the lending laptops you should alert the front counter staff and we will have fixed things as soon as possible.

Regards,

Daryl Clarke

Request for Location of Book

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Q. I am hoping that you may be able to help me locate a book entitled “So, You Wanted to Fly, Eh?” (Memoirs of a Glider Pilot).

Author: H. N. (Andy) Andrews
ISBN: 0-9695-827-5-7
Published by: Institute for Studies in Teacher Education, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, B.C. U5A 1S6

I believe it was published around 1997.

My cousin in England has recently seen a copy of this book in the Museum of Army Flying in Middle Wallop, England. He would very much like to purchase a copy of the book as his father was a Glider Pilot in WWII in the same Squadron as the author.

I would be very grateful for any assistance you can give me.

A. Hi,
I have referred your inquiry to Dr. Peter Grimmett, Director of the Institute at SFU that published this work. He is familiar with this publication, and will contact you to make sure you get a copy.

Suggestion for New Title Purchase: The Blog Entries Of Hosiery Advocate

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Q. I have a book suggestion, even though I’m not a staff member, student, faculty member, alumna, nor alumnus. I am a local author [i.e. from Surrey, BC].

My new book is a collection of my blog entries, which are about my attempts to bring shorts and hosiery into the mainstream heterosexual man’s wardrobe. I want to get this fashion trend going, because I want to test my abilities and my knowledge of trends. I want to do that, because I want to find a more gentler way of bringing about social change, as opposed to using debates, protests, legislation, and scolding.

The Blog Entries Of Hosiery Advocate [Edition 1.1]
ISBN 978-0-557-70081-3

http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/the-blog-entries-of-hosiery-advocate-%5bedition-11%5d/12996136

I don’t know who would read it, but it is a very unusual endeavor, and I would be willing to speak at an event to promote my book.

Sincerely, and with thanks.

A. Hi,

Congratulations on the publication of your book.

We do appreciate your suggestion for purchase for our collection, however after consultation with the faculty in the Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, we must decline your offer since this title would not support their teaching and research.

I wish you well with your efforts in bringing about social change through your blog and the book.

Sincerely,
Moninder Bubber

Book Request

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Q. Dear Librarians at Simon Fraser University,

I am a graduate student at the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). I’m conducting research this semester on Amiri Baraka’s production of satiric/ political commentary pre- and post-911. Your library houses one of the books that I need. Unfortunately, I am not able to receive the book through InterLibrary Loan.

If it is possible for you to scan or photocopy the 19 page book “Bushwhacked!,” then I would appreciate receiving a copy of the text. Please let me know if there would be costs or fees associated with this process. I really need this text before I can begin writing.

Thank you for your kind assistance.

A. Hi,
Yes, the SFU Library can scan Bushwhacked! by Amiri Baraka and send it to you as a pdf attachment. The pdf is for your personal research use only and cannot be forwarded on to other individuals. The item is in Special Collections at SFU Library and thus we were unable to send it out on interlibrary loan.

Hopefully the scanning will be done by Friday. However, if not, it will be another week before we can do it. I will let you know if we are unable to get it to you before the end of this week.

Best regards,
Don Taylor
