Grateful for Access to the Library

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

I was lucky enough to have access to this library for six years as an undergrad; looking back I am struck by how much (and how often) my thoughts changed and were enriched while studying and reading here. The freedom to read whatever piqued my curiosity, and to have access to such a wide range of texts, was one of the most rewarding aspects of my undergrad years, and is probably what I will miss most. Thank you for allowing alumni to continue to use this library.

Hi,

Your book request was forwarded to me, the Business Librarian, since the book is on a business topic. Thank you very much for sending in a suggestion.

We try to focus our purchases on resources that will support research and teaching here at SFU. In my experience, popular business books often don’t quite fit local needs, but I do make exceptions. I’ve ordered a copy of “Delivering Happiness” and asked that it be fast-processed and put on hold for you when it arrives. You should get an email from the library at that point.

Thanks again for taking the time to send in a suggestion.

Access to British Library Direct and/or IOBC WPRS Bulletins

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Q.
Please get access to British Library Direct and/or IOBC WPRS Bulletins. You do currently not have access and there are no records found at any other libraries. The lady at the help desk was only able to show me how to use the online forms and junk, which I know how to do, what I need help with is getting two certain articles from the IOBC WPRS Bulletins.

A.
Thank you for your message. Articles from the IOBC/WPRS Bulletin are available via SFU Library Document Delivery Services, as it is held by a number of large US libraries as well as by the National SciTech Library, CISTI, in Ottawa. Later volumes appear to be catalogued by the issue title, as the Bulletin is a book series. Therefore it may have appeared, when searching library catalogues, that in fact they did not own the Bulletin.
The link to the from for requesting articles via Document Delivery Services is :

http://www.lib.sfu.ca/find/document-delivery/request-form

If you are not a graduate student or faculty member, please send your request to me directly since the system will not let undergraduates request items that are not held in Western Canada. This is because of the length of time it takes for many articles or books to be processed and delivered to SFU from outside of Western Canada, or else because of the high charges we sometimes have to pay to lending libraries outside of Western Canada.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.
Best regards,
Don Taylor

Library Fines

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Q: How can I pay a library fine if I am not able to come to campus? It seems that fines are only payable in person.

A: Hello, If you are not coming to campus, then fines can be paid by telephone (778-782-4345) using Visa or M/C, or you can mail a cheque (payable to SFU Library) to Loans Division, W.A.C.Bennett Library, SFU, Burnaby BC, V5A 1S6

Book renewal

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Q.
I just borrowed a book and wanted to renew it at 8:01pm tonight by telephone, but nobody would pick up the phone. I called about 15 times just to make sure, but there was no response. As a result I will have late charges on my account. Would you please remove these fees whenever you get the chance?

A.
Hi
The library was closed yesterday due to an electrical upgrade. Nothing should have come due on Sunday because of this closure. I checked your record and the only item you have checked out is not due till the end of the semester. So it looks like you are ok.

take care

Laptop Lending Program

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Q. Hi:

Could you tell me what kind of laptops (make and model) you are using in your
‘loaner’ program, and how many you have available?

Thanks.

A.
Hi,

We currently have 50 Dell latitude E6500 checkout notebooks at Burnaby, and eight Dell latitude D520 checkout notebooks at our Belzberg branch.

Students can check out the notebooks and use them anywhere on campus. Students have access to the same programs and features as on our wired workstations, and can print to pay printers anywhere on campus.

Extension on Due Date

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Q. Hi,
I go to Quest University and recently took out some books from the Bennett library. I have not been able to make it down to the Library given that I am in Squamish and my due dates are coming up soon. Is it possible that I can an extension on these books until June when I have some time off in my classes? If not, is there any other way for me to get
the books to the library? Thank you for your help and I apologize for any inconvenience I may have caused.

A. Two of the items you have out are coming due soon; since you have already maxed out on the number of online renewals, I have overridden the block and renewed them for another 3weeks from the due date.

If you are unable to return the material in person by that date, there are two possible alternatives. 1)The items can be mailed (or couriered) to: Library Loans Division, W.A.C. Bennett Library, SFU, Burnaby, BC V5A 1S6. 2)You can check with Quest library and see if they will allow you to ship them back to us via their Interlibrary Loans – one caution on this avenue is that the books are not considered ‘returned’ at the point you give them to your library, they are ‘returned’ when they reach our library; if there are any delays in the shipment, you would be held responsible for the overdue charges.

The remaining items out on your record have a semester due date of Sept.; if another patron places a hold/recall on the item, you will be notified to return the item early (usually within 1 week).

Library Website

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Q: On this page http://godot.lib.sfu.ca:7888/godot/hold_tab.cgi (and some other pages) the heading “Where can I find this?” is a poor choice. It is confusing (Who is meant by “I”? What is meant by “this”?). Also, it is impolite to ask a question and not provide a way of giving an answer. Please think about the philosophy of this page, so that a clear and concise heading line can be given.

A: Hi,
The phrase “Where can I get this?” has been in use for quite some time in our online system. It also reflects a very common question that is posed by many at one of our public service desks when they are trying to find something. The use of a rhetorical device such as a mock-question is a common communication technique in advertisements, online systems, etc.

It certainly isn’t our intent to be rude or to generate confusion. We are always hesitant to change the wording on a key function like this, especially as it seems to work well for many. But I would certainly be interested to hear what suggestions you might have for some alternate wording.
