Join the SFU Intercultural Community Program on March 1st for the Museum of Vancouver’s “Curator’s Talk & Tour: Neon Vancouver, Ugly Vancouver”. All students (international & domestic) and friends are invited to attend this event!

When: Thursday, March 1st, 7:00pm
Where: Museum of Vancouver, 1100 Chestnut St (Vanier Park), Vancouver
Cost: $10 (tickets available upon arrival at the museum, or online HERE
Meeting place: Museum of Vancouver main entrance, 6:40pm

Activity: Museum of Vancouver’s “Neon Vancouver, Ugly Vancouver” Exhibition

“Did Vancouver’s flashing neon signs signal glamour, excitement and big city living? Or was neon part of a tawdry display that disfigured Vancouver’s natural beauty? Joan Seidl, Director of Collections and curator of Neon Vancouver, will delve into this question and more, in this in-depth talk and tour. Learn more about the history of the signs in the exhibit, Vancouver’s evolving hate/love relationship with neon, and how MOV came to hold a significant neon collection.”

Please bring/prepare: Students must bring valid SFU student ID card. Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended, and students may bring cameras.
Note: All participants must be comfortable standing/walking for one hour.

Grads and Families Fall Welcome iCafé Social – Thursday, September 22nd

Welcome to fall term – to all new and returning graduate students and families! Please join the SFU Graduate International Community Program (Grad ICP) for a monthly iCafé. This is our special fall kick-off, featuring multicultural snacks from local Vancouver bakeries, tea and coffee, mingling and opportunities to build friendships. This event is free, and open to all SFU graduate students and families.

Location: Shell Basement (SFU Residences), SFU Burnaby

Eat, Talk, Dance! Graduate social with snacks, Latin salsa dancing and music

Calling all graduate students, friends and family!  Spring term is almost over!  Take a break from your end-of-term stress and join the SFU Graduate International Community Program (Grad-ICP) for an afternoon of friendly conversations, snacks and some Latin music and dance!

Come and stay for as little or as long as you’d like… Eat as little or as much… Dance as much or even none at all, as you are comfortable! (Although we’re confident that once you come, you won’t want to leave!)

Time: Snacks and mingling throughout from 4:30 – 6:30 pm. Brief salsa lesson and demonstration at 5:00 pm
Location: AQ 2013 (next to Simon C’s Convenience Store), SFU Burnaby

Curling for Grads and Spouses

Looking for a fun, affordable way to get out and meet other students? Always wanted to try a local, Olympic winter sport but couldn’t find the chance? The SFU Graduate International Community Program invites all SFU graduate students and their spouses to a fun-filled afternoon of curling! No experience necessary, as we’ll have instructors!

When? Saturday, March 5, 2011
What time? 3:30 – 5:30 pm
Where? Royal City Curling Club (75 East 6th Ave, New Westminster, BC)

Meeting place?
 
Royal City Curling Club is within easy transport access from Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey. Please choose to meet at:
1)   2:45 pm at Braid Skytrain Station, or
2)   3:15 pm at Royal City Curling Club

Cost: $12 (A great discounted rate which includes space rental, equipment and instructors) 

How do we register? 
Please bring payment and photocopied proof of health insurance for each participant to SFU International (MBC 1200, Burnaby Campus) during office hours (M – F, 9 am – 4 pm).
Upon registration, each participant will be asked to sign a liability waiver.
*Spots are limited, so sign-up as soon as you can before the deadline of 4:30pm on Monday, February 28th

If you are based in SFU Surrey or Harbour Centre and unable to make it to SFU International by the registration deadline, please contact Mari, Grad ICP Coordinator, at intl_community@sfu.ca .

 Physical requirements:
- Curling requires a fair amount of balance as well as constant bending and use of arms

Please bring/wear:
- a pair of running shoes with clean soles to use on the ice (does not have to be new)
- warm attire
- money if you wish to purchase food and beverages after the event (there is a lounge area at the  Club)

Snowtubing at Cypress Mountain

Join the SFU Undergraduate International Mentorship Program and Graduate International Community Program on Saturday, February 19, 2011 as we go snowtubing at Cypress Mountain!  All undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to attend this event!

When: Saturday, February 19, 2011, 10:00am-1:30pm (Tubing 10:00am- 12 pm, Free Time 12:00pm- 1:30pm)
Where: Cypress Mountain, West Vancouver, BC (Bus Transportation provided by SFU International)
Meeting place: SFU Residence or Phibbs Exchange, North Vancouver (see below for details)
Cost: $15 (A great discounted rate!)

To sign up for this event, please bring:
(1) photocopied proof of health insurance and
(2) $15 to SFU International (MBC 1200).
Upon registration you will be asked to sign a waiver form.
