External Awards: Canadian Federation of University Women fellowships for Canadian women

The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW/FCFDU) offers a number of scholarships to women in graduate studies.

Awards range in value from $2,000 to $11,000 and applicants must be women who are Canadian citizens. Different awards have different criteria, such as enrollment in a history program, enrollment in a PhD program, enrollment in a fine arts program or returning to academia after years away.

The application deadline for the 2012–2013 academic year is November 1, 2011.

Canada’s Most Powerful Women

Three SFU Business alumni were named in the 2010 Women’s Executive Network’s Top 100 Canada’s Most Powerful Women, which lists the top achievers and leaders in our nation’s private, public, and not-for-profit sectors.

Congratulations to Zabeen Hirji ( MBA ‘94), Chief HR Officer, Royal Bank of Canada; Loreen Paananen (EMBA ‘95), EVP, Retail Development, Shoppers Drug Mart; and Bev Park (EMBA ‘02), President and CEO, Couverdon Real Estate.

All three women were recognized in the Scotiabank Corporate Executives category, which recognizes women who hold senior positions in Canada’s publicly-traded and privately owned companies, pension funds and co-operatives.

External Awards: Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation

The Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation of Canada Scholarship for Canadian Women includes three scholarships in the amount of $2500.

The deadline for the 2011 scholarship is February 1, 2011 and the applicant must be a Canadian citizen in a PhD program.

External Award: Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund

Margaret McNamara Memorial FundThe Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) supports the education of women from developing countries who are committed to improving the lives of women and children in a developing country.

Individual MMMF Scholarships are between $12,000–$15,000 and must be used during the 2011-2012 academic year. Past winners’ biographies are on the World Bank Family Network website.

Soroptimist Foundation of CanadaThe Soroptimist Foundation of Canada annually offers several $7,500 grants to female graduate students in Canada to assist them with university studies which will qualify them for careers which will improve the quality of women’s lives.

Application deadline is January 31, 2011. If you’re interested in applying for this grant, we recommend downloading the application form and beginning the process as soon as possible to allow your references enough time to send in their letters by the application deadline.
