External Award: Malaysia International Scholarship

Petronas Towers, by Vibin JK, http://www.flickr.com/photos/vibin/2576202147/The Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS) is an initiative by the Malaysian Government to attract top students to pursue post-graduate and post-doctoral studies at twenty public and four private universities in Malaysia.

Priority fields of study include science and engineering; agriculture and fisheries; economics and Islamic finance ; information and communication technology; biotechnology; biosecurity and food safety; infrastructure and utility; environmental studies; and health (including but not limited to, nursing, medicine, clinical pharmacy).

Each scholarship consists of air tickets to Malaysia, tuition fees, monthly living allowance, annual grant for books and internal travel and more.  PhD and post-doctoral students will also receive a thesis allowance, a conference travel grant and a journal publication grant.

Applications must be submitted through the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia’s online application system. The application deadline is June 15, 2011

The Nobel Laureate Meetings at Lindau

This August, 22 Nobel Laureates and 350 young economists will meet in Lindau, Germany for the 4th Nobel Laureate Meeting in Economic Sciences.

SFU’s Department of Economics is pleased to announce that Pierre Nguimkeu, a PhD student in Economics, has been selected as a Young Researcher who will be attending this prestigious international event.

Pierre Nguimkeu is a native of Cameroon who currently works under the supervison of Dr. Pascal Lavergne. He was awarded a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship in 2010.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, PhD ‘96, appointed to African Development Bank

Dr. Mahamudu BawumiaCongratulations to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who has been appointed resident representative for Zimbabwe by the African Development Bank.

Bawumia earned a PhD in economics from SFU in 1996. He is a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for the Study of African Economies, University of Oxford, and former First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana. He was also a Vice Presidential candidate in the 2008 Ghana elections.
