FCAT and Science PhDs at spring 2011 convocation

This morning’s convocation saw a parade of SFU’s new PhDs in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology and the Faculty of Science.

Their red gowns with blue Cambridge bonnets are regalia which which originated in the monasteries of the middle ages.

At the morning convocation, Dr. Karel Lucien Casteels received his doctorate from the Department of Mathematics and was awarded the Governor General’s Gold Medal for achieving the highest academic standing upon graduation from a graduate program. His thesis was The combinatorial structure of the prime spectrum of quantum matrices.

Congratulations to this year’s Convocation Medal Winners who will receive their awards at our Spring Convocation, June 14–17, 2011.

Governor General’s Gold Medals
The Governor General’s Gold Medals are awarded to the two SFU graduate students who achieve the highest academic standing upon graduation from a master’s or doctoral degree program.

Dean of Graduate Studies Convocation Medals
The Convocation Medals for graduate studies recognize graduating students from each faculty whose cumulative grade-point averages place them in the top five per cent of their class.

Free Moby songs and video contest

Moby Vimeo contest

Three songs from Moby’s latest album are available for free download from a Vimeo contest website. The contest is to create a video using one of those songs.

Ten finalists will be highlighted on the Vimeo website and the winning contest entry will be screened at the New Directors’ Showcase in Cannes.

Submission deadline is midnight EST, May 9, 2011. Good luck!

Alumni profile: Andy Yinan Hu

Andy Yinan Hu

After Andy Yinan Hu finished his MA in Communication in 2006, he went on to do investigative journalism for China Daily.

He’s currently the Deputy Editor and Staff Writer on China Daily’s News cover story team, and was just profiled on the FCAT website. From undercover work at the iPhone and iPad factory to a series from the Kenya-Somali border, he’s been a prolific contributor to his newspaper.

Alumni profile: Masa Iwase

Masa IwaseCongratulations to Masa Iwase, recent CMNS grad, for winning the Language and Literacy Researchers’ of Canada Master’s Research Award for his thesis, New literacies, Japanese youth, and global fast food culture: Exploring critical youth agencies.

He’s received $500 and an invitation to present at the Canadian Society for the Study of Education Conference in New Brunswick this May.

  1. 2011 Scholarship Program
    Four awards for students accepted into or enrolled in a full-time, graduate-level or other advanced program in film or television studies or production, library or information studies, archival administration, museum studies, or a related discipline.
    Value: $4000

  2. 2011 Kodak Fellowship in Film Preservation
    For students who are US citizens and who are accepted into or enrolled in a graduate-level or other advanced program in moving image studies or production, library or information studies, archival administration, museum studies, or a related discipline.
    Value: $4000, a conference, and an internship in Los Angeles
