SIAT Student Research Project: In search of women gamers

Terry Lavender and Natalie Funk, graduate students in SFU’s School of Interactive Arts + Technology, are looking for participants in a research study on women, gaming and weight loss.  Participants will receive a $50 Amazon.com gift certificate for spending two hours watching demos, playing video games and completing a questionnaire.

You may be eligible if you:
• Are a woman between the ages of 25 and 50
• Are fluent in English
• Like playing casual or social video games
• Are interested in new ways to improve your weight and health
• Are available to travel to SFU Surrey (accessible by SkyTrain and bus)

Job Posting: Community Advisor Positions in Residence

SFU logoSFU Residence & Housing is hiring Community Advisors in Graduate & Family Housing (Louis Riel Residence & Hamilton Hall).

This is a one year contract position that will begin in August 2011. The rate of pay is $3000 per semester.

Preference will be given to graduate students for these positions as Hamilton Hall and Louis Riel are primarily graduate student buildings. To be eligible, you must be a full-time student throughout the duration of employment and be in good standing with your graduate/professional program.

Faculty of Environment seeks project proposals

Faculty of Environment students

SFU’s Faculty of Environment has just posted a call for collaborative courses or activities that “enhance teaching and associated environmental education in the broadly defined area of environment.”

Projects must:

  • involve tenured/tenured-track faculty or lecturers individually or in teams (may include staff)
  • focus on the broadly defined area of environment including humanities, social sciences and natural sciences as well as sustainability
  • support teaching or associated activities at either the undergraduate or graduate levels
  • involve collaboration with FENV or FENV collaboration with other Faculties

Funding can include graduate student support and faculty buy-out/overload, and projects can be single-term or extended over multiple terms.

IEEE International Symposium on Applications of Ferroelectrics

IEEE International symposium

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers  (IEEE) is holding a symposium in Vancouver this July 24–27: The 20th IEEE International Symposium on Applications of Ferroelectrics, jointly held with the International Symposium on Piezoresponse Force Microscopy & Nanoscale Phenomena in Polar Materials.

Graduate students are invited to participate in the short courses on Sunday, July 24 and in the poster competition. Some financial assistance may still be available.

They’re also looking for student volunteers to help out at the symposium. Volunteers can request to be an attendant at specific sessions and will receive full admission to attend lectures and sessions around their volunteer schedule.

Student Leaders needed by SFU International

SFU International Student Leader, Graduate Language Circles (2 positions available)
Language Circles are a unique opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of various cultures as well as develop social connections with students from diverse backgrounds.

Language Circle Student Leaders are responsible for developing language circle events to be held in the recently renovated AQ 2013 space, where students will have the opportunity to learn basic phrases of a selected language in a casual and interactive setting.

SFU International Student Leader, World Films (1 position available)
The World Films Student Leader coordinates ongoing international movie nights that allow SFU students to experience the visual representations of societies throughout the world through film.

SFU International Student Leader – English Conversation Facilitator (1 position available)
The English Conversation Facilitator is responsible for English Language Conversation events to be held in the recently renovated AQ 2013 space, where spouses/partners/families of international students will have the opportunity to practice basic conversational English in a social and interactive setting.

They are inviting qualified individuals to submit applications for the nine-month Internship, to be located in Calgary. The internship stipend is $34,200.

SFU International Job Postings

SFU International is currently recruiting for a new graduate student leadership position for the Spring 2011 term.  The Graduate International Community Programmer will work closely with the International Student Advising team to create a series of events designed to build community between international and domestic graduate students at SFU.  The type of activities offered will appeal to the interests of a diverse group of students and provide a platform for a deeper understanding and exchange of cultures.

SFU International is also recruiting International Student Leaders to coordinate graduate Language Circles.
