Alumni profile: Laura Byspalko, MPub

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

Laura ByspalkoWhen Laura Byspalko graduated from SFU’s Master of Publishing Program, she moved to India and formed Idefix & Co.

This January, her company worked with Teamwork Productions on the Jaipur Literature Festival in January.

She’s delighted to be partnering with them again this summer to organize an Indian cultural festival in Vancouver. The festival, Indian Summer, will take place at SFU Woodward’s from July 7-17, 2011, with programming highlighting both the contemporary and traditional sides of modern India.

The festival will take advantage of several cultural confluences: 2011 is the Year of India in Canada, as well as Vancouver’s 125th anniversary. It will celebrate the city’s diversity by showcasing top Indian performance artists, across dance, theatre, music, literature, food, film, visual arts and yoga and wellness.

She says, “My husband is Indian and I’m Canadian, so we find ourselves in an exciting position to be able to build dialogue between our two native lands. There is so much cultural richness the countries have to offer each other, and yet there is too little cultural traffic, poised as they are at opposite ends of the globe. As a graduate of the MPub program at SFU, I of course thought of my alma mater, and with the lovely new Woodward’s Centre now open, partnering with SFU was an ideal relationship. It’s wonderful to be able to return home and bring with me some of the incredible talent that I’ve been introduced to in India since my first visit here in 2003.”
