Since 1997, the Coady International Institute’s Youth In Partnership Program has given recent Canadian university graduates experience working with development organizations in their area of expertise, to help them increase their understanding of development issues and participate in their roles as global citizens. The program is also aimed at providing experience that will improve participants’ employment opportunities when they return from their internship.
The interns work for six-months with one of the Coady International Institute’s partners in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean. Interns who go to Rwanda and Botswana are placed with Xtending Hope partner NGOs whose work focuses on issues related to HIV and AIDS. This year, 6 of 14 internships will be in these two countries.
The Coady International Institute’s Youth In Partnership Program is considered by many to be the most reputable program in the country, particularly for the outstanding support provided to the interns and their family/friends.
To prepare them for their overseas work experience, the interns participate in a four-week orientation program at the Coady Institute. This Youth in Partnership program is unique in terms of what it offers the participants who are preparing for a work placement overseas.
During the in-Canada portion of the program interns have access and exposure to:
- Coady staff, who represent a collection of experienced and dedicated development professionals.
- Community leaders from around the world (attendees of the Coady Institute’s Diploma Program in Community-Based Development) who share their residence and classrooms with the interns for four weeks prior to the interns’ departure.
- A comprehensive pre-departure orientation program.
- A thorough re-entry and debriefing program upon their return to Canada.
Upon their return to Canada, each of the interns will participate in a two-week re-entry and debriefing program at the Coady Institute, which is specifically aimed at helping them find long-term employment in their fields of specialization.
In addition, the interns undertake a number of public engagement activities to share their experiences with the Canadian public.
