YOUR ONLINE BRAND…..

Jason Alba, author of ‘I’m on LinkedIn ~ Now What???’ and founder of the career management website JibberJobber.com, gives 5 tips in creating a solid online brand!

1.  Blog 3 Times A Week:

If you haven’t already established an online presence, Alba suggests the best way to show up on search engines and claim a significant amount of the first page of results is to have alot of content that’s comes up associated to your name.  For example, get noticed and distinguish yourself from the other jobseekers by posting 3 times a week within your field, industry or profession.

2. Get Accounts on Google-Friendly Sites:

Create profiles on websites such as LinkedIn.com, Jobster.com and Emurse.com. Your profile should be: customized to a specific field or industry(like your resume), search-engine friendly, include plenty of targeted keywords to hook the interest of a hiring manager that is reading the post or searching the profile site.

3. Comment on Relevant Blogs:

Build some kind of name recognition by posting comments on a popular blog within your career, educational or passion area (ie. a business student majoring in finance, could comment on well-known finance blogs)

4.  Keep it Clean:

Alba reminds people that their name is attached to these posts and online writing is difficult to “erase” and to avoid strong language or profanities, discriminatory comments, excessive whining and ultimately anything overally negative.

5. Substantiate Yourself:

In your online posts demonstrate you have experience or expertise on the topic your are writing about by providing evidence to sustantiate that claim.  (ie. A computing science student pursuing a Webdesigner or Game Developer career within the hightech industry, may link to their personal website and online resume and portfolio)

Since 1997, the Coady International Institute’s Youth In Partnership Program has given recent Canadian university graduates experience working with development organizations in their area of expertise, to help them increase their understanding of development issues and participate in their roles as global citizens. The program is also aimed at providing experience that will improve participants’ employment opportunities when they return from their internship.
The interns work for six-months with one of the Coady International Institute’s partners in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean. Interns who go to Rwanda and Botswana are placed with Xtending Hope partner NGOs whose work focuses on issues related to HIV and AIDS. This year, 6 of 14 internships will be in these two countries.
