Summer Hiring Fair Hits SFU
Amidst the chaos of midterms and papers, it probably doesn’t feel like summer will ever get here, right? Think again! Summer is actually just around the corner and the time to be looking for a summer job is now.Â
What were you doing on Wednesday, February 20th? If you weren’t at the 2008 Summer Hiring Fair, you missed out on a great chance to network with representatives from a range of industries who are eager to hire students. Students at the fair had the opportunity to ask employers questions, find out more about the job positions available, and receive information booklets and packages.
If you weren’t able to make it to the hiring fair, but you still want to know what kinds of summer employment opportunities are out there, be sure to check out the websites of the organizations that attended. Also, be sure to apply early! Many of these organizations are currently accepting applications.
Here’s a SNAPSHOT of some of the organizations that attended, and some key points to keep in mind when applying:
Cara Airline Solutions
ï‚§Â Hiring 80-100 students this summer
ï‚§Â Positions: drivers, kitchen staff, cooks, dispatchers, people to work in the warehouse
ï‚§Â No experience required they do provide training
 They’re looking for individuals who are dependable, reliable, enthusiastic, and willing to learn
Oak Bay Marine Group
ï‚§Â Hiring a few hundred students this summer
ï‚§Â Positions: guest services, room attendants, deckhands and outdoor staff, kitchen crews, guides, food servers, and more
 They have opportunities all over BC, so it’s a chance to get out of town
ï‚§Â No experience required they do provide training, such as first aid
 They’re looking for individuals who show initiative, are enthusiastic, and motivated
Canada Border Service Agency
ï‚§Â Hiring 150-200 students this summer in the BC and Yukon region
ï‚§Â Positions: students would have the same duties as a full-time border services officer
ï‚§Â Possibility of bridging into the organization after graduation
ï‚§Â Apply through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP)
 They’re looking for individuals who are responsible, good problem solvers, and assertive
TD Canada Trust
ï‚§Â Hiring occurs all year round
ï‚§Â Positions: bank tellers
ï‚§Â They provide flexible shift and lots of opportunities for advancement and after graduation employment

 They’re looking for individuals who are confident, friendly, demonstrate excellent customer service, and are willing to go the extra mile
WorkSafeBC
ï‚§Â Positions: internship opportunities and opportunities to fill in for F/T staff on vacation
ï‚§Â They provide a diverse array of positions for students with the chance to move into higher position after graduation

Cintas Canada
ï‚§Â Hiring 6 students this summer
ï‚§Â Positions: approximately 4 summer openings for students and 2 openings for recent graduates interested in the management trainee program
ï‚§Â They offer career advancement and the opportunity to try out different areas of business
College Pro Painters
ï‚§Â Hiring 300 students this summer in Vancouver region
ï‚§Â Positions: painters and job site managers
ï‚§Â No experience in painting necessary
 They’re looking for individuals who are hard working, willing to learn, and are dedicated to doing a high quality job
Parks Canada
ï‚§Â Hiring 200 students this summer in BC and Yukon region
ï‚§Â Positions: they provide a range of opportunities for people with different interests, including environment, finance, and HR

 They’re looking for individuals who have good interpersonal skills and a range of other skills depending on the position
Expert Recruiters

ï‚§Â Positions: This summer they will be hiring for administrative positions, however, they have opportunities in other departments throughout the rest of the year
 They’re looking for individuals who have good oral and written communication skills, experience with the public, and good computer skills
